Is it worth spending money on gaming mice and keyboards?

Get a no frills mechanical keyboard and a mouse with a perfect sensor (WMO) and you're set. No such thing as gaming mice / keyboards.

- You don't need macro keys
- You don't need media keys
- You don't need blacklit keys or any WOO FLASHY LIGHTS!!1
- You don't need angle snapping
- You don't need hardware acceleration
- You don't need OVER 9000 DPI
- You don't need 30 buttons on your mouse
- You don't need a mouse that feels like a brick
- You don't need an LCD screen on your keyboard
- You don't need USB or jacks on your keyboard
- You don't need a laser mouse

Have I made my point.

you do need a laser mouse :o

I have:

Microsoft Wired Optical Mouse
Cheap Logitech Keyboard
50p Mousemat

Never had any problems playing games (FPS, etc) with this. The best mouse I had was a £5 Chic mouse. The Microsoft mouse is the only other I've got that feels right.

Sod it. Just ordered an x4 after seeing some reviews. Will try it and RMA if not an improvement over the logitech thing im using at the mo, I expect it will be good though and look cool with the blue deathadder!

i wouldnt be without my razer black widow ultimate or my imperator...

absolutely love my mouse...

mechanical keyboards make the word of difference from me...

A good mouse is well worth it gaming keyboards are not unless you need macro keys.

WMO or Deathadder 3G have the best sensors going, or a good laser mouse like a G9x, G500, Sensei.

I would have said the opposite, sure your mouse should be comfortable and usable, but most are. Keyboards, yeah you can get away with a cheap one, like a Logi 200. Better still a 20 year old one with a steel plate in it ;)

But if you have the money, then going mechanical is worth it a hundred times over. Possibly one of the best PC upgrades you could get.

Mechanical =/= Gaming

Well yeah, but i thought we could apply some common sense here and not buy cheap plastic rubbish with LEDs and stickers all over it, and instead buy expensive plastic bliss which... i lost my train of thought. But you get the point, no? :D

I suppose but to me a gaming keyboard is backlit, macrotastic, usb hub type affair sometimes with mechanical keys.

Give me a Filco Majestouch 2 Tenkeyless over a Razer or Roccat or Logitech keyboard anyday.

I used to think why bother with expensive mice/keyboards when you can save a load of money and get a standard replacement, but then I bought a Razer Lycosa Mirror and a Deathadder on a whim - Some of the best money i've spent.
Great performance; never randomly died or stopped working like my stock mouse that came with my computer >.<
Aesthetically pleasing; especially the pulsating effect on the deathadder!
Great design; especially backlit keys! So much better than awkwardly positioning lamps or burning out the main light in the room at night.

Anyway something I've been wondering about is mechanical keyboards and the love they get here. I bought a mechanical keyboard a long time ago (back in beige PC days) and utterly hated it - took relatively huge effort to press a key and clicked and clacked so loudly it was genuinely like using an old mechanical typewriter! So my question is was that just a piece of turd and I haven't experienced a decent mechanical keyboard of the type people rave about here, or is that indeed what they are all like? If so, why do people like them?

Cheers.

Anyone?

A Deathadder costs £30. So you don't need to spend more than £30 on a mouse, because sensor-wise the Deathadder is perfect. If you like the shape there isn't a better mouse you can buy.

Maybe for you in the end, yes then you don't need any of that stuff ;)

However many people will have different uses to you and some will like having the extra stuff.

Unless people have actually used a backlit keyboard (the proper good ones that are laser etched), don't pass to much judgement on keyboards that have them especially considering you can get them pretty cheap anyway, they really are much better for being able to EASILY see the keys and are great if you game late at night with the lights off and they do look much fancier/better than just a standard plain keyboard IMO.

You're on a computer hardware forum and you need to look at your keyboard to type?

you do need a laser mouse :o

Optical is better than laser. So far there's no laser mouse that outforms the top optical mice (Deathadder, MS Intellimouse etc) at the sensor level. From what I remember even the best laser sensors have positive acceleration of some sort that can't be helped.

You probably tried an IBM model M, or some sort buckling spring switch type. These are known for being hard to press down, but it's just one type of switch. Most people these days use Cherry keyswitches (brown, black, blue etc). The brown and blue switches are the most common and they're very light switches. Lighter than almost any regular membrane keyboard I've tried. I think the brown switches require only 45g of force to press down, but I can't rememeber the amount exactly so I could be wrong.

Only gaming keyboard really worth paying for are Mechanical keyboards in my opinion. "Pure" gaming keyboards are just full of overpriced gimmicks that you will almost never use (like extra buttons for macros).

A good mouse is worth it in my opinion, just make sure you prefer the "claw" style or the "palm" style.

I have a G5 and G11, very happy with them.

I always use the extra mouse buttons, but never the macros on the keyboard. Backlit keys are awesome though.

- You don't need macro keys If you play games like wow etc. this would be handy It's not handy, wow and other MMOs have built in macros, no need for extra keys for them :p
- You don't need media keys Personal preference again, I used to have a Microsoft wireless keyboard that had all the volume, play/pause keys and I used them all the time, was quick and easy to access/use whilst watching a film etc. The reason I said you don't need media keys is because you can use software to program shortcuts to "media functions". For example my scroll lock key is a global mute button, while ctrl + page up / down are volume up / down.
- You don't need blacklit keys or any WOO FLASHY LIGHTS!!1 Have you ever used a backlit keyboard? They are actually very good especially if you like to game late at night and not have lights turned on at stupid hours in the early morning/late night. They also make it much much easier to see the letters on the keys, more so the laser etched keys Yes, I've used a keyboard with backlit keys and stand by what I said. If you can touch type there isn't a need for them, and I doubt anyone who's looking to buy a "gaming" keyboard will have to look at the keyboard to use it :p Also I don't use my PC in the dark.. it's not good for your eyes.
- You don't need OVER 9000 DPI True
- You don't need a mouse that feels like a brick Again personal preference, some people like the mouse to be as light as possible, some like it heavy, I like it the mice to have some weight to it but not be a complete brick to move about I suppose this is true but honestly I can't see why anyone would want a mouse to be heavy, the lighter the better really.

you do need a laser mouse :o

Care to explain why? Laser sensors offer no advantage over optical sensors, it's a gimmick. Just like any DPI over 800 is.

I agree with the first part of your statement but that last part should actually be that any DPI over the native DPI of the sensor+lens combo is a gimmick. Also strictly speaking you should always use the native DPI of your mouse and adjust sense in game for best results.

Couple of questions regarding the Filco's:

Why do people go for the "tenkeyless" versions over the ones with the numbpad; I find the numbpad pretty useful.

Do I go for:

Tactile action
Click action
Linear action

?
