Evo theif dies in car crash

According to the BBC

An 18-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene and the 17-year-old driver was taken to hospital after being freed from the Mitsubishi Evo.

So the thief is in hospital and the passenger dead.

At least he's not going to be able to steal my car in the future, and thank goodness he didn't take any innocent members of the public with him.

I would not call it stolen unless his uncle reported it stolen. Kids take their parents car out for a drive all the time without permission but you don't really consider it theft.

It TWOC, hence stolen.

Big thread on Pistonheads about it too, interesting comment about it potentially having a roll cage aswell which is never really good when not wearing a helmet.

Surely consent can be given retrospectively? If I go outside now and take my mum's car without specifically asking to I have not stolen it. I know that if asked, she would give permission. In the event that she was asked whether I had her consent, the answer would be yes.

And in the event the owner of the Evo being asked this, he would be prosecuted for letting someone knowingly drive his car without insurance.

I struggle to have much sympathy, but I know of friends who 'borrowed' their mum and dads cars over the years without consent, I was a passenger in a couple of them too so I can't really cast assertions in anyones direction, simply part of growing up. Whilst in the eyes of the law it's not different to stealing a strangers car I'd be surprised if they didn't know the uncle really well, but play with fire as they say...
