Vegetarians are hypocritical.

agreed if it's for environmental reasons but if your grounds are moral then it's hypocritcal.
Not really, only if you believe in moral absolutism.

It's more moral to make an effort & reduce total suffering than it is to do nothing - being in the mid-way is preferable to being at the negative extreme.

I assume we both eat animal meat, but does that mean we should all go out and kick a few dogs to death for the fun of it?.

Person A can eat meat, but be against excessive suffering (like not subduing animals before slaughter, or the deliberate extending of suffering) - boiling/burning alive - ignoring medical problems etc.

Person B can also enjoy eating meat, but be against the killing of animals for entertainment - sports.

It's not all or nothing.

I'm vegetarian simply because that's how I've been brought up. It comes from various beliefs in my family (eg Jainism).

jainism eh.. pretty intense..

Basically if your personal reasons are moral, and you believe animals shouldnt be killed or harmed for their meat then im sorry but if you drink milk then that IS hypocritical.

The dairy industry comprises of raping female cows, painfully milking them 24 hours 7 days a week, slaughtering their babies, and ultimately slaughtering them.. If thats not harmful or cruel to the animal, then I dunno what is.

If you are vegetarian for other reasons then all that is irrelevant.

It might have done in the past. But I'm sure there's modern scientific techniques to work around it. A cow needs to be pregnant to create milk right? Well I'm pretty sure there's methods that alter the cow's hormone levels, such that it can produce milk without actually being pregnant.

I’m vegetarian myself and I don’t care what other people eat, it’s my own personal choice, however people always seem to have a problem with me being vegetarian and always ask stupid questions.

By that logic an environmentalist would be hypocritical for having a hybrid car when instead he could cycle everywhere.

Not really practical all the time is it? All im saying is, it's hypocritcal. Not how much more or less righteous they may be.

and anyways, driving a hybrid car has nothing on a vegan diet when it comes to c02 emmissions.

nope. a cow has to be pregnant. The only thing altered is the amount of milk the cows able to produce.

It's just something people do.

It's like they see a vegetarian & say "AAHHHARRR - they are not 100% for animals in every single way - they are stupid".

But forget they are not at the other end of the line also & most would be against excessive & un-needed cruelty to animals.

The fact is about 99% of the population are in the middle.

Jainist -> Vegan -> Vegetarian -> Meat eater (concern) -> Meat eater (no concern) -> pro-blood sports -> involved in blood sports -> enjoying watching animals suffer.

(that's order in which they "care for other life forms" - as most vegans will happily kill bacteria & other microscopic organisms.

I'm a vegetarian because I don't believe we need to eat meat in this day and age, the meat industry as a whole is one of if not the most polluting and destructive industries in the world, it's a waste of land, it destroys important forestry due to soya crops for feed, methane and carbon emissions from cattle and meat transportation top that of all other industries, and that's not evening delving into the ethics of mass slaughter, people will argue saying there's not enough arable land but there is plenty enough to support a majority vegetarian society in most countries, the only real issue I see is the effect it would have on jobs and the economy.

I very rarely drink milk, and I try to stick to paneer cheese, no one can live without effecting the world negatively but you can prioritise and minimise it greatly, I personally think going vegetarian is a good first step due to the meat industry having such a large negative impact in many areas and also is questionable morally and ethically.

I only really ever discuss this topic if it's brought but, it's hard to explain to somebody that they a doing something wrong, (which I believe they are) when they are brought up eating meat, it's like telling them that breathing is wrong, it's just perfectly natural to them so I just keep my mouth shut, I personally think it's a part of our evolutionary process, I think over time we will slowly move towards a vegetarian society anyway, atm it's still to ingrained into us traditionally and a large part of our economy.

I'm a vegetarian. I'm not strict; I eat fish, and duck. Well, they're nearly fish, aren't they? They're semi-submerged a lot of the time, they spend a lot of time in the water, they're virtually fish, really. And pigs, cows, sheep, anything that lives near water, I'm not strict. I'm sort of like a post-modern vegetarian; I eat meat ironically.

:)

If the human race wasn't meant to eat pigs, chickens, cows etc etc then why are they so tasty and why do they smell so damn good while cooking? I rest my case.

:p

Her sister tried it out and she decided to give it a go. Apparently she felt so much better than ever before so decided to keep it up. I still don't understand how refusing to have leather or wool makes you feel better but hey ho.

Impressive. Would never have that dedication. Plus meat tastes too good....

I think pescatarians are worse...

Some people would argue that humans aren't supposed to eat meat because it needs to be cooked. Other animals just rip the flesh off each other and nom it. It could be argued the fact that humans are unable to eat raw meat is perhaps an evolutionary trait indicating that humans aren't really meant to eat meat anymore.

Are we not meant to drink tea hot? Are we not meant to drink milk cold?

"anymore" did we once only eat it raw at some stage of our evolution? (genuine question, stupid as it may be)

I can relate to people who get fed up of veges. My group of friends has about equal meat eaters and vegetarians, we all get along just fine. You do meet vegetarians with a chip on their shoulder, people who feel they are doing the world, and you a favour.

They shop at ASDA and have iPods - just like most people. :p
