New rumours from "credible" sources suggest all three next generation consoles will make an appearance.

I think this is about right. E3 2012 sneak peak for a 2013 release for Sony and Microsoft. A 2013 sneak peak for a 2014 release seems way too late. This generation to me has gotten very stale, exciting times for console reveals.

Just have a look at the news sites, PS4 & XBOX 720 rumours pretty much everyday. No smoke without fire.

But is it a roaring flame, or just the faintest flicker of a flame on some kindle ?

Probably the latter IMO. It would be naive to think they have done no work towards the next gen consoles. But i sincerely doubt we'll see a proper full release (as in available to buy) this year of a PS4 / Xbox 720

I don’t think this year is the best time for Sony to release a new console they are still struggle to get the price of the ps3 down 6 years after its release.

Also both consoles are still making money and have a long way to go before saturating their markets, the wii is on its way out I expect the wii u (terrible name) to be out this year.

Not gonna happen, (well I hope not :p), we may get a glimpse from something from MS but tbh I'm doubtful about that even, as XPE says sales for both consoles are still booming, especially the 360 in the states, and the PS3 is still selling well globally, also MS only recently extended the life of their machine with kinect, MS practically pitched that as xbox 360 2.0, stating that it would extent the life of the machine another 5 years if I remember correctly, although obviously there will be some overlap into next gen I really don't foresee Sony or MS showing their next gen systems until at least 2013 CES or E3.

I disagree, i'm still very much enjoying what this generation has to offer very much. When the PS2 reached the end of its lifetime it very much felt like it; the PC had pulled miles ahead in terms of graphics (while its ahead of current consoles the gap isn't as big as it was between PS2 and PC at the time of the announcement of the PS3) and games were drying up. I feel this isn't yet the case for the current gen with the Wii only just coming into its stride and motion control/3D being a big 'new focus' for the other two (whether people like it or not)

How can there be a 720?

Wasn't the 360 bit of Xbox 360 supposed to represent the circle around the X?

720 degree shape? Thats gonna look strange.

What do people want from the next generation of consoles besides improved visuals? The jump from previous gen to the current generation that we are in now saw considerable improvement in the online services of both consoles. What can the next generation offer besides an improvement in the graphical department?

Improved online service?

Remember when Microsoft were talking about the future of live and mentioned being able to do stuff like paint a Forza car on your PC then go in and race with it on your 360, how about that?

I'd like to be able to have a screenshot feature in the guide button that I could then download to my PC.

In fact in general just more interaction with other devices and less being closed off.

They could do that sort of stuff with the current hardware though, it's just lazy development holding features such as that back. You can already create boots, kits etc for FIFA using the PC tool and then have them in game on your console. Same for player faces and stuff so there's no reason why, if Turn 10 were that way inclined, couldn't offer a piece of software to make it easier. Plus, I'm sure you can already make liveries in Photoshop and then get them into Forza. :)

Improved enemy AI. Obviously only applicable to games with hostile enemies in, but this is the main area I would like to see improved.

I always think it's a bit daft to show off your next console 18 months before release. It's almost as if you're signalling to consumers - don't buy any more of our consoles now as the new one is on its way.

Even if they did bring out a new console, they will keep the same GUI so it ain't going to look any different and the only obvious difference will be a blu-ray drive.

So the only thing I can see being brought in by new hardware is fancy graphics and loads of breaking consoles within the first year.

I ain't overly fussed on a new console but I think we will see one by next year.

I'm looking forward to the Wii U, purely because the Wii feels incredibly dated now. Even playing games that aren't graphics reliant (like Wii Fit, Guitar Hero etc) it's a bit of a chore. Skward Sword is lovely, but hard to look at after playing Uncharted 3.

Really not fussed on a new PS/Xbox though. Still feels like there's plenty of mileage in them both to me.

I would think the next consoles will be less about advancements in gaming and more about integration with tv, internet and smartphones. Sony and MS want their 'console' to be the entertainment center of your house.

Agreed - dont think Sony are in any real shape to do that especially as it probably take thunder away from Vita while its still the new kid on the block. Perhaps though if MS give a vague launch window it will give Sony a chance to aim for that (I doubt it will be before E3 2013), they cant afford to produce a late console this time around IMHO, as they dont have something like BD as an alternative USP.

Also with regards to the stale comment, once you peel back the visual fidelity of the new consoles it will still be the same (apparently tired) franchises - not really that appealing if thats what youre thinking now...

The naive way Im looking at it is that Uncharted 4 no doubt will be a PS4 launch title and Id hazard a guess that would be a Xmas 2013 title at the earliest, would say the same for GOW4 and the Tony Hawks Xbox...

I would expect them to see how Nintendo does with it's Wii-U controller. That seems a neat idea to me having a small display so you can permanently keep a map up or arrange an inventory without leaving the game world to bring up a menu, etc.

TBH how hard would it be to have an iOS/Android/WM7 app that has that same information pushed over WIFI? Im sure it be something they could securely do, even if they decided it was non-interactive...

Yeah but it would need to be something that everyone has in the box. I bet Kinect and Move will be bundled from the outset in the next consoles.
