Boiler Condemned :(

We had our boiler replaced just last week by British Gas, a Worcester Bosch 15Ri. Both the engineers that came to install it had nothing but praise for them, and the service engineer that fixed our old boiler highly recommended them too.

The service engineer said stick to either Worcester Bosch or Valiant, but Glow Worm are okay too.

The one we had replaced by the Worcester Bosch was a Glow Worm, lasted well.

We replaced the glow worm in ours because it was forever breaking down...

And every plumber/heating engineer we spoke to said they wouldn't use a glow worm for a foot rest, they are pieces of junk lol.

This happened to me a few years back. BG were 'servicing' our old old boiler while I was at work. Got a call at lunchtime from a rather worried gf saying BG had condemned the boiler and switched off the gas.

When I got home and had a look, the engineer had sheered one of the bolts for the boiler housing, so it couldn't reattach and seal. Muppet. My dad fixed it, but BG then refused to come out and recertify the boiler, simply saying it had been condemned and that was that. What was worse was because BG had condemned it, no other heating company would come and turn the gas back on, even after inspecting the repair.

In the end I had to buy a new (Worcester) boiler. Still going strong thankfully.

I find it amazing that they have this power. Open to such abuse.

I agree, ours was fine for years then just started going downhill gradually.

That's what the service engineer said anyway, he was very strong on Worcester Bosch as number 1, then Valiant as number 2 though.

mate i've had soooo many problems with my powermax 155, aparently a family died from carbon monoxide poisioning a couple of years back from the same boiler

In october I had a Worcester Greenstar 30i installed for £2.2k, it's a lot of money but a small amount to pay when we have kids in the house:)

It was an absolute joke. BG refused to send another engineer (I use that term loosely) even though we explained what the prev engineer had done and how we fixed it. They wouldn't let us speak to the previous engineer either. To them the situation was completely black and white - condemned boiler, case closed.

I don't understand how BG can do this, switch off the gas and walk out. What did they think we were going to do for cooking/heating? They didn't even put us in touch with Sales on the offchance we might need to, you know, buy a new boiler.

They simply wiped their hands of us and cancelled our homecare agreement.

It wasn't like we could just walk into Tesco and buy another boiler... I didn't know the first thing about them at that time. I learnt pretty quick though.

Get a Worcester Bosch. Best boilers.
That was also my impression from doing a bit of research.
I can't comment on other boilers because this is my first one, but it has been trouble free for years and it looks properly built inside. Having seen a friends install I quite like her remote radio thermostat too.

However, when they run the condensate drain, either get them to install 22mm instead of 15mm, get it properly insulated (not just the stick on pipe insulation that falls off) or better still, run the pipe as far as possible indoors.

Ours regularly froze up in the previous two cold winters and then it stops working.

With a modern boiler the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning is absolutely tiny, the fules are fanned unlike in th good old days of the blanced flue so everything should go outside the only risk is a massive leak on the boiler itself or the section of the flue inside the house.

If your so worried about your kids saftey even with your all singing all dancing Worcester boiler you should have a Carbon Monoxide detector installed which would cost about a 100th of your boiler replacement!

I did read that! I've had a quote of £1800, which doesn't sound too bad really.

when you have small children in the house a boiler breakdown in the middle of winter would be a disaster, so it's not just the carbon monoxide i was concerned about:)

Hardly a disaster, kids survived thousands of years without central heating, we've all become so soft these days it's laughable.

Don't get one of these, EVER!!!

Like has been said, worcester or valiant. My preference would be worcester but both are good boilers.

German made stuff is usually top notch, so are viessmann an exception then ? I have no idea as I am not a Heating Engineer, but I have seen the name come up in recommendations.

I really need a new boiler, mine is older than me (born in 89) and looks like it was made from bits of old tank:

It's also really inefficient, ~74% when new and need to heat the hot water tank for hot water. It's also developed a hilarious fault whereby the upstairs radiators come on when it's set to hot water only, great in summer.

No monies though, and to be fair it has been quite reliable, only gaining an 'at risk' from bg due to taking oxygen from the kitchen.
