game in serious trouble?

I can't wait for the day that pre-owned is gone

So you think nobody should be able to sell things they dont want anymore?

How completely curious.

Do you also think that once you buy a house you shouldnt be able to sell it if you dont want it anymore? Hurts new housebuilders doesnt it?

But when a brand new game is on sale in Game for £44.99, yet they are pushing the second-hand, guaranteed to work copy right next to it for £39.99, then most people will take the cheaper one.

I have stated above several times now that in my experience (Which it seems in this thread is fairly unique) this is not actually what happens. With a price differential of just £5 (Which it usually is with a new release, sometimes even smaller), the majority take the new product.

I think for games, with things like EA's Online Pass or Epic's Season Pass, new sales or digital distribution is the only way to go. I'm not going to bother with car sales, builders, second-hand clothes, houses, boats, planes, spacecraft or anything.

Like I said the digital era. Has nothing to do with pre-owned but it's a place where a lot of gamers now purchase (at a extremely low price) their product.

You really don't understand.

Everyone keeps going on about how digital downloads will considerably lower the cost of games and they keep ripping on steam at how their prices aren't that much cheaper than a brick and mortar store. It's not down to the fact that they are greedy and scrimping pennies. Just the simple matter than actually physically producing a DVD with a game on it and a plastic case probably costs about 1-2% of the final retail price of a game.

Car manufacturing would also be booming if you couldn't sell cars on! Charity shops also hurt the clothing industry, naughty charities!

So guys can i sell my old TV or am i going to have to destroy it? I don't want Samsung to be losing out on any money.

When you bought that Samsung TV in Comet, did they have a practically unused second-hand one right next to it for a few quid cheaper....?

Thought not.

When you bought that new Ford Focus did they have a 2 month old one sitting within eyeshot at £4000 off?

Oh wait, actually they did.

Is the car manufacturing industry on its knees as a direct result?

Oh wait, actually it's.... not.

Is preowned a new problem?

Oh wait, no..

You won't be able to buy a physical copy of a game in a couple years time..

Game shops, pre-owned..it's all over.

Physical Media will always be here. We will never get to the stage where we are 100% digital. The only thing that will change is how you get that physical thing through your front door.

You didnt answer my question. Please answer it.

I think people/individuals should sell their games if they want to, but I don't like GAME capitalizing on buying games of people at a ridiculous price and selling them at a hugely inflated rate. I don't like how they push push and push pre-owned games, rather than new. There was a time, pre-GAME with Electronics Boutique when they actually cared about games.

Yes its business and its all about profits. Maybe just growing up with decent game shops and seeing them fade away is just, sad.

He's probably one of those strange people who post unboxing videos of standard edition games on YouTube, wearing a costume of one of the games lead characters,

Probably has a shelf full of dusty £44.99 priced games from woolworths etc.

Cool, personal insults.

This forum is great as always.

Can we please stop with the car analogies?
Why does everything always have to come down to a car analogy on these forums? They just don't work as a comparative product.

They are the most expensive item people own after property, they have to be bought and sold second-hand. It's all very well known that brand new car's tend to depreciate the second you leave the forecourt, so unless you are buying one with a great warranty, second-hand is better value for money.

While car dealerships may well have brand new cars and secondhand cars right next to each other, how many other sectors of retail can you say the same for?
