No I dont think so. There are about 30 questions all together and we have managed to get everyone but these 2 and all the other answers dont have a missing zero

It doesnt actually mention anything about decimal places in her homework but as long as the answer is

989 for the 1st

8 for the 2nd

then I dont see why not

Does it mention rounding or has it involved rounding in any other question? If it doesn't then I'd tend to think that it isn't allowed.

Although I've got to admit I'm not getting any closer to the answer than 988 for the first just using whole numbers with zeros inserted into the sum.
 
forgive my obvious ignorance, what does that symbol mean? I only did a-level maths and I know I've drunk and smoked my brain into submission since then but I don't recognise it! :p
 
Remember this is homework for a 12year old so I wouldnt expect the answer has anything to do with advanced mathematics

10000000001 - 100001 - 11 = 1111011101 (989)

Decimal
1025 - 33 - 3 = 989

The second one....

Binary.
11000 - 1010 - 110 = 1000 (8)

Decimal
24 - 10 - 6 = 8

But 12 year old? Really?

Anyway it works like this.

As soon as I saw all 1s I knew it was going to be binary. No other way it could work mathematically.
