Is it me or is anyo9ne else not that excited about the 7900 release

and yes, maybe we should refrain from purchasing cards at these prices, I will be, the problem is certain people on here becoming very defensive.

I agree...I can't believe that people are actually defending the price..

Its like " I actually think this is well priced for a Top end card"

Well let me tell you something people...Its not!

Its a gen behind in real terms against NV 580....12 months on its slightly faster thats it.

The 6950/6970 was just a great card for £199 unlocked and clocked it just made sense against the high cost of the 580

A year later this is faster and yet cost's £300 more...Its ludicrous on every level.

"Battlefield 3 ends up being one of the worst games for the 7970 from a competitive standpoint. It always maintains a lead over the GTX 580, but the greatest lead is only 13% at 2560 without any MSAA, and everywhere else it’s 3-5%. Of course it goes without saying that realistically BF3 is only playable at 1920 (no MSAA) and below on any of the single-GPU cards in this lineup, so unfortunately for AMD it’s the 5% number that’s the most relevant."

So more than 12 months on from the GTX 580 release the 7970 is only 13% faster in the lastest game BF3 and at lower resolutions just 3-5% faster.

I can see your points guys, but it's really not about the gamers..honestly it isn't. Dig about a bit and this card is all about computing power, being easier to program and a new architecture that should bring AMD back on parity with NV for non gaming tasks...
You're both talking about the gaming performance, the cost, and how if it was cheaper it would wipe the floor with NV. AMD aren't bothered at all with wiping the floor with the 580, they're after the tesla market. Much higher margins, profits and a totally different market. Just because it does actually game pretty well is a small by product of something that is designed to be good at both games and computing, and actually excels at computing which games can harness. OpenCL is what this is aimed at with AMD having lots of compiler tools and what not available right now. It's more modular too, so they can mix and match and hit a lower price point. Really, stop focussing on the games performance, that's not what it's for. Get them out there for as much as they can get away with, get some money in and then go from there with this new architecture, new process etc. etc.
Don't you think that if AMD wanted the real performance crown these would have come in clocked at 1ghz as standard, stuff the 300 watt "limit"??? Of course they would, but they want cards to drop into workstations, and they also want to be seen to be pandering to the green crowd as well. It's a nice balancing act, something that you guys feel they have got wrong regarding the price.

That's why I am happy with my 570 which is overclocked to 580 speeds. Cost less than a 580, and offers the same kind of performance. /Strokes 570

The only thing that I wish it had more of is VRAM, but that is not a good enough reason for me to fork out £400-500 for a GPU in 1920x1080 res, which handles everything fine. I don't use AA in all my games (I don't even see the point either at times).

Ohh and of course, for you gamers out there, partners will release overclocked parts straight away. Sod the 300 watt limit, but that of course is there choice

I like the specs and performance, specially at high res. Which is what I'm looking for at 2560x1440.

The problem is the price and it's performance compared to the GTX580 3GB.

I've currently still got a GTX470 ( which I got for £180 ) and at the moment it's just barely hanging on in games.

I just don't see me spending that large amount of money right now, specially when I don't know what Nvidia might be offering.

I'll be holding off until then to make up my mind. If NV's offer is about the same or only slightly faster I'll go for the best priced one and at the moment this 7970 is just not that. Specially given that it's previous Gen was so much more affordable.

I'm after a card with good TDP as well,as I'm running an mITX system with a 600w PSU.
If the 7970 was out at the similar price to 6970 or even at just £350 I would probably have bitten and bullet and bought it by now.

I think the deal certainly with me (and perhaps other people) is what you can get for your money instead if you were to pay £400-500. I know, if I were to be buying components, I could get a top SSD, couple of 1TB hdds and maybe a couple of new games, and a BD-RW. Or if you didn't want computer components, you could buy a LED TV or a reasonable spec surround sound home cinema system or HD projector. I think I would get more enjoyment from those things than one GPU. If you're gaming higher than 1920x1080 then it might make sense, but for the rest of us, it's OTT for the money.

Don't get me wrong, if I had one I would be chuffed, but I would definitely be questioning it's worth in the price range it currently sits in if I bought one - especially if it was £100 cheaper in a month.:o

I totally agree

The days of 500 quid cards are numbered for me....Its offers nothing really in terms of Stimulation:p

Most would 350 is all the card is worth.

But then the 7950 would be £250 or so and most would be better off grabbing that instead.

Very true indeed, and AMD would have foothold from selling many cards. Like what it did with the 58xx series.

EDIT:: The last pc Component I spent €500 on was my Hazro 27" monitor, which was the best pc buy I made all year.

Have to agree. Think Amd have dropped the ball on this one. Should have sold bucket loads of 7970\7950 at £325\£250 instead of many many less for the silly inflated prices of just now. Although to be fair the price gouging is not their fault, been quite disgusted to be honest. It is not too late for Amd to redeem themselves and reduce prices after a couple of weeks. Kind of like the football prices, £20-£25 for a Scottish Premier League game, dwindling crowds etc, value for money blah blah. Make the football £10, double the gates, sell more pies, drinks, programmes etc, make the same money at the end of the day but get bigger crowds, better atmosphere etc, you get my drift. Same with graphics cards, reduce price, sell more, more enthusiasts, more customers, sell them something else. Worked before for Amd, why change it.

Assuming there are bucket loads to sell. Which seems unlikely as they only have a single card launched...

Well, getting towards the end of the second day and we have a new generation graphics card (limited in numbers) that can still be gotten quite easily, unheard of in my opinion.:)

I agree that amd have released this card with clocks that dont show its full potential due to them wanting to keep the power usage down. This makes the price of the card look too much for me.

Fully overclocked in some games its close to the gtx590/6990 which is pretty impressive for a single gpu card. I want to see where the prices are in a month or 2 before i make my judgement though.

Now settled for an 1150/1650 (925/1375 standard) overclock at 1.3v, even in Heaven, card temp never got above 77ºc and the fan noise wasn't overly intrusive. Plus, you don't have to have a nuclear reactor to power it to decent overclocks - I'm only running a 600w 80+ Xigmatek.

In all my GPU upgrades, this has been the single most leap in technology power, moreso than Sandybridge.

Correction: I want to see the 7990!!
