Do you have to pay for petrol if say you go in and pick up other goods then got to the till to pay and the cashier DOESNT ask you if you have had any fuel.

I was having a discussion with some colleagues at work a while ago, one of which used to be the manager at a petrol station said that there was some sort of law/clause that if the cashier doesnt ask you if you have had any fuel you are within your rights to drive away without paying.

Now this happened to me yesterday and the cashier was only going to charge me for the goods i'd picked up in store.
I paused for a few seconds then told them which pump i'd used as i didnt want to try out this theory and end up being prosecuted and the fact that it just felt wrong!

So guys, any one heard this myth or is it true, whilst writing this it sounds more and more like BS to me but i just thought i'd ask lol :o

Does sound like BS.

If you drove away without paying they'd just check the CCTV and then track the car to you. Unless you've stolen a car :D.

They will have camera's though surely? As soon as they realise that pump x has not paid and has driven off, they will look at the camera's and PID you, take your reg and send someone round your house to arrest you for theft.

You dirty criminal :p

Sounds serious, I mean when i walk down the street i usually punch every woman i see in the face, reason being they didn't tell me not to.

Seriously ?

You honestly had to ask that question and your allowed to drive a car?
Theft is theft plain and simple

Surely it is common sense that if you intend to purchase something, and you can't physically put it on the shop counter, you tell the person at the till???? :)

Its legal OP, trust me i do it all the time. I suggest once you do it, park up outside the station, return and laugh at their misfortune of losing a full tank of petrol.

I work at a fuel station.

If the cashier dosent ask you if you have had fuel and fails to take payment for it then you can still be procecuted for theft because you should have said you had fuel.

If you have had £30 fuel you know very well you havent paid for it if your bill is only 7 quid for you cigs or whatever.

However, if you have been into the store its unlikley the police would proceed with any case as its most likely to be blamed on the cashier as its thier responibilty to secure payment for fuel.

It's even simpler than that in some cases; forecourts use number plate recognition systems that automatically log your licence plate when you pull up to the pump. Your licence plate is only then removed when you pay, and the cashier clears that pump number. Simple.

More than once the pump has cut out on me whilst filling up at my local tesco express, so it has to run twice; first time fills about 70L, second time is about another 15L.
When this happens the person behind the till only ever quotes me for the 15L, the second use of the pump. I usually allow a slight pause then say 'what about the other 70L?' The look on their face is priceless.
But I'm an honest sort of guy.

On our systems youd have to pay for the first lot before the pump would activate for a second time.

This is sounds similar to a cafe at the train station near me. They have a sign saying "if we don't give you a receipt with your order and you tell us, the order is free"

See, that's the kind of thing that gets up my nose... (not you hehe :p ) but the fact it takes an age to fill up with 89L without back-pressure stopping the fuel flow, you have to take it steady near the top, so the helpful machine thinks I've finished, when I've not.
