Just after a few suggestions really. He does at least 20,000 business miles a year so a diesel would be best i'd say. budget of £7k or less. No other requirements then it shouldn't cost a fortune to maintain.

Any ideas?

I'm guessing he gets expenses on a per mile rate?

Are thing like repairs, servicing etc paid by your father or the business? Again I'm guessing your dad, but could change things if it's the business...

is there a better engine for that? any one's he should avoid? i assume the 1.8 is crap?

B@

I've driven both the 1.8TDCI and the 2.0TDCI. I'd avoid the 1.8 as it doesn't seem to offer outstanding economy results as opposed to the more powerful 2.0 unit.

Also there may not be the need for the Titanium X for your dad. Yes the interior will be a tad nicer, with a few mod cons as standard. But a specced Zetec will be more than adequate, which will keep costs down as the tyres will be cheaper than the Titanium X model.

I wouldn't want to do 20k miles in a Zetec model, unless it had the optional cruise control, improved CD player etc. The middle ground is the straight "Titanium" trim, although that will still have the larger alloy wheels.

I agree with your comments on the engines, I preferred the 2.0TDCI engine (although I ultimately bought a petrol one :))

Is cruise really an option on the new shape Mondeo Zetec that seems like a very backward step given that it was standard on even the LX model in the old shape!

I get 44mpg out of my 140ps and im not light on the throttle! :)
I image someone doing 20k miles will get ~50mpg easily. (Not sure about the GTi though??)

Sorry but 44mpg out of a 2.0 petrol Golf. I just plain don't believe you (you linked to petrol ones so a reasonable assumption is for me to assume your is petrol too).
For 20,000 miles of almost all driving to and from work I would be looking at 2.0-2.2 turbo diesel of a mid-migh spec'ed 2008 car.
Plus the GTI is absolutely not a suitable suggestion.

EDIT: Something along these lines http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/3395527.htm a 2.0 tdci 1 owner car with a reasonable mileage on.

nice cars but expensive to run compared to a mondeo

not really.

Everybody remembers why i bought my volvo and at the time everybody was taunting me telling me i was out of the frying pain and into the fire etc..

2 years and 28,000 miles later and i can't see i've spent much at all. Two services, 6 tyres, (2 fronts, 1 back) a coil pack and an exhaust is all i've spent so far.

140,000 miles its on, and still on the original turbo & clutch. Not sure where you get the idea they are expensive from ?

Petrols can be economical too it depends on the car.
I am averaging 43mpg at the moment in my 1.8 petrol Civic and not trying to drive eco.
On a 250 mile trip from London to home travelling at the speed limits I averaged 48mpg.
Yes out of a diesel you are likely to get more but with the rising price difference between petrol and diesel you need to do more and more miles to make it worth it.
