Question for UB/Don/Spie

So I got a 3 days suspension for having my name on my photographs? It is the same as my user name, it is not a website .co.uk address. The same watermark that I have been using for the past 3+ years.

And not to be "stirring the pot". How is the othe thread re "my company won wedding video photography of the year" not be self promoting?

Absolutely, see you over in TP if this carries on :(

*starts packing bags*

It's not rocket-science, from my reading of AM's pronouncement...

Instead of Joe Bloggs Photography, one would simply have Joe Bloggs DD/MM/YYYY - no direct link to a business/company.

Which is - where I suspect - the notion of "borderline" creeps in.

Well where does it say that on Raymonds photos? all it says is his name? Uh?

Bit point less...

What is wrong with having photography after a persons name? If I saw Raymonds picture with the new water mark "Raymond Lin XX/YY/ZZZZ" and wanted to know more I would google Raymond Lin PHOTOGRAPHY.

Its a tough situation however I have never seen any images or threads on here and thought the photographer was self promoting. If such self promoting is banned then the removal of all "please go to this website and vote for this person" should be banned.

Mad as the other thread in here is actually promoting.

I understand for most other sections but watermarked photos or photos with URL's on i dont see a problem with as long as it was taken by the person and it isnt just spammy images.

There must be somewhere better to go than TP! As mentioned above, there is only so many "Great shot" comments you can take!

True, probably why ive not ventured on there for a while.

In short - what the hell's going on; when I first ventured into here the only 'mod' to ever come in was Spie - and that was to show off his new Lecia (or similar) and then disappear again.

I thought we were all reasonable, adult, self-regulating people in this sub-forum that didn't need minding

This is getting ridiculous. There's a difference between spamming the forums with "Need a plumber in London?" threads etc and sharing photos and good news and being part of a community.

If his photos and my thread isn't allowed then that's news to me - only a week ago another wedding photographer posted his magazine feature and that's been happening for ages thankfully.

Either it's allowed or nobody can post any photos at all; the area in the middle is too grey.

No-one is saying that photos aren't allowed. What is not allowed is self-promotion. It is clear in the FAQ.

Before this gets silly, how about we propose 'one of our own' to be the mod for this sub otherwise I fear the mods who don;t frequent here dont 'get' what we're doing and is able to be fair to us all.

As such I propose Raymond Lin

Any other backers?

I would propose myself but it needs one with respect and standing with us all.

I think if you need to be so protectionist about work then an open forum isn't the place to post it? Seems very strange to me.

Strange as you (a Don) asked about my prices in that thread!?
I did indeed :)

shall not be participating in this sub forum anymore.

That is a shame.

I'm not sure what you mean.

Pictures are fine guys, just don't promote your business. I understand the need for watermarks so by all means use ones that are not business related.

youve never had your work stolen and/or passed off as someone elses then? a watermark/logo is probably the quickest and easiest (although granted not foolproof) deterant.

seems a shame not to share your best shots with others that will appriciate them..

Yes, I have. I'm not sure what that has to do with anything, mind.

That's fine, use a watermark. Just don't have a business name or URL on there.

...and yet it is 'best shots' that will be the most open to theft and plagiarism. If you want there to be no chance of being misused don't post them.

Gilly,

What I meant was that someone like Raymond (or GSXR etc..) who is active in this sub-forum, has their own interests so is able to see distinguish between protecting and self-promoting as they'd be doing it themselves. Since not all the mods are active in photo you might take one persons protection as self-promoting when it isn't intended to do so - like what I think has happened with RL
