Post apocalyptic novels recommend

The Survivalist series by Jerry Ahern isn't too bad but can be rather 'samey' from time to time.

I Am Legend by Richard Matheson is supposed to be a good example of the genre and better than the film although I've not read it myself.

I can't say I'd recommend The Road particularly highly but perhaps it's worth reading simply to be able to say you've read it even if for no other reason.

Last Light & Afterlight

The Morningstar Saga:
Plague of the Dead
Thunder and Ashes
Survivors(pre-order)

The Morningstar author Z.A. Recht died in 2009 so didn't get to finish Survivors.
Hopefully it turns out ok.

Day of the Triffids

There are a few other Wyndham books that are good too... I'll have to check my book case tonight!! :)

See I would recommend reading it, although it is set in a post apocalyptic world, it is less about that and more about the relationship between a farther and son, and the evil that people can do.

If you like Zombies then the Day by Day Armageddon series by J. L. Bourne are fantastic reads, on this same note as already mentioned World War Z is fantastic.

Again on the zombie theme, if you enjoy B movies The Rising and City of the Dead by Brian Keane are fun reads.

I also quite enjoyed One by Congrad Williams, although the first half of the book is much more enjoyable than the second.

Also, while not strictly post apocalyptic, Mockingbird by Walter Tevis is fantastic. It is set far into the future when man has forgotten how to read or write, told from the perspective of a man, woman and android.

I would also suggest reading Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell, I found this book very hard to get into but once I did it was fantastic. It starts in the 1800's, and goes all the way through to a Post Apocalyptic future, telling half the story each time, then goes back through each story back to the 1800's where you will notice the links between each story.

A final suggestion is A Canticle for Leibowitz by Walter M Miller. The basic story is that man kind has destroyed itself and science was blamed, a new dark age began. It tells the story of the order of Leibowitz trying to protect and restore history, and goes through 3 different time periods.

I hope this post helps, I have more suggestions if you need them as I love these kinds of books but these are some good ones to get you started!

I didn't enjoy it much but as you say it may still be worth reading , not least because it puts you in a position to discuss it and its merits or lack thereof.

Another novel I've just thought of that might be suitable is Cat's Cradle by Kurt Vonnegut, entertaining and weird in about equal measure.

A Canticle for Leibowitz is excellent - but it does take some persistance in the middle section to get through it (at least that's what I found).

Some other recommendations would be:

I Am Legend - Richard Matheson. (Much better than the film)
This Is The Way The World Ends - James Morrow
Wolf And Iron - Gordon Dickson
Some Will Not Die - Algis Budrys
The Chrysalids - John Wyndham

Just started Veteran by Gavin Smith, it's fun :D Though I thought it was supposed to be post-apocalyptic whereas Scotland just sounds the same as it is now? :p

Zombie themed - Hollowland by Amanda Hocking.

It's got everything: Canadians with wacky names, zombies, rockstars, Aliens references, a bratty kid, cultists and even lions and tigers (just like Kenya!)

:D
