My M54 has had a diet of 0w30 (I believe) each time it was serviced by BMW. However, castrol and many of the oil sellers out there say it should be 5w30, which I don't think is quite right. Also, people are going on about only using Castrol, which is what BMW would use, but its not ACEA A5 B5.

Would it be fine using THIS?

Just get any BMW LL04 approved oil. I always used Castrol Edge in my M57 engined 330d, but any LL04 oil would have done.

The original factory fill was Castrol SLX Longtec 0w30, of which the current consumer version is Edge 0W30. But any BMW LL01/04 approved oil is fine. I'm currently using Edge 5W30.

My manual says that the actual grade is not so important - just that it meets BMW LL01 specification.

I umm'd and ahh'd about it and decided that LL01 would be better for a M54 as it has higher SAPS than LL04. I went to Costco and all they had was Castrol 5w40 which is LL04 or Mobil 1 0w40 which is LL01 and also A5/B5.

There was a Castrol "guide" on the shelf which said All BMW engines should use 5w40

Anyway, in short, I bought 10 litres of Mobile 1 0w40 for pennies under £60

I could have taken it to National who said they would "put the best oil in" however they refused (not even dissuaded, point blank refused) to consider doing it on a weekend, even three weeks in advance. I guess they don't work weekends then... I asked how long it would take and the guy said about half an hour, so I said well how about I bring it in at 5pm one evening (bearing in mind they close at 6) "ohh no, that would be too late, we would need it all day" WTF!!!!!

Now my question is, do I belittle myself and go to BMW for the oil filter or do I go for Hengst or a cheaper Guttman from Eurocarparts?

I had the same with National. Booked online for some Edge 0w30 as an interim oil change and the store manager of the local branch rang me up and basically told me it was all a mistake and I should go away. Called head office who apologised and rebooked me. Picked my afternoon slot.

Turned up at 1pm and was told by a completely disinterested person that I should leave them the keys and come back at 5pm.

Bear in mind this was on an industrial estate in the middle of nowhere and nobody had told me they would need 4 hours to complete a 15 minute job.

I left and eventually got a refund.

Only cars asking for LL01-FE need A5/B5 oils (2.9 HTHS). These are Valvetronic engines I believe

BMW filter ALWAYS, if you have a Sytner than there is a discount from Anneka, if you don't have one then BMW cotswold.

It will be all of a pound difference..

So anything from a decent manufacturer that meets LL01 is fine for the M54 engine? Was it you that said that LL01 was better for the old BMW engines as it has higher SAPS or something like that?

In short, will I kill my engine by putting 0w40 LL01 approved Mobil1 in it :D

Getting a discount from Anneka:

Sign up and post on E90Post. Send her a PM with what you want. Get 10% or so. Arrange to collect from a Sytner dealer.

Getting a discount from Cotswold:

Phone them using the details on bmwland. Get 10% off with free post to your door.

Yeah LL01 or LL04. Both meet the same performance requirements.

I honestly wouldn't worry about the Castrol/Mobil/etc badge! People have been using it fine on the BMW forums .

Naa, just go to Vauxhall, say can you price match XXXX dealer as they've quoted me this, and they will do the price or get very close, like £14 or £15.
