Home cinema system that plays MKV blueray rips?

depends on what you call a 'home cinema' i guess.
Do you mean and all in one package out of the box?
For multiple filetypes including mkv, media players like the PS3, WDTV will all play MKV and as long as the audio is encoded correctly then your 5.1 speakers should handle it accordingly.
I'm no audiophile, my setup would be classed as all-in-one out of the box, but with my media player attached to it it plays everything fine.
WDTV Live is my media player.

edit: Actually my LG BX580 BD player has networking/media centre facilities and it plays blueray ripped MKV from my network shares.

Any PC with VLC player will play MKV's I don't know of any "off the shelf" home cinema system that will play them though, most only play AVI's and MPEG's

Well I have a WD HD live, so if that plays MKV bluerays I could attach that to my 5.1 home cinema system and all should work?

I am talking about these £300-£500 systems like the Samsung HT-C6500 etc

Yup, my WDTV Live had no problems playing mkv's. HDMI straight from WDTV Live to your AVR and you're good to go buddy.

IMO its worth avoiding those all in one systems at all costs. Whats your budget? There are plenty of people here that can spec you a decent system to fit.

Indeed, the only ones worth considering are the Onkyo kits, the rest are trash really. They're just DVD/Blu-ray players with some extra speakers tacked on.

My Onkyo all-in-one cost £299 and i love it. the AVR has 3 HDMI in's, 1 out, is 3D ready and the 5.1 sound i get is awesome and thats froma 22sqm room.

I have no doubt that separates are probably better, but i also firmly believe that you 'should' expect better when you pay way way more for separate stuff.
Audiophiles are just the snobs with more money than sense.
£1000 for an amp....get real!

Dude, you'll be fine with the Onkyo's as TheVoice has said. Take a look at richersounds.

I have a (fairly old now) Sony BR player that's so far played every file type, including MKV, from an external HD.... and does a fairly decent job of it as well.

I'll dig out the model number for you.

My samsung blu-ray player manages them. I have noticed that it will only play a HD audio stream inside an MKV file if its on a disc though. The same file on a pen drive will only play the video. If you stick to normal DTS or dolby digital it seems to handle every MKV I have thrown at it so far. Some as high as 8GB in size.

To which model do you refer? and does it include speakers and all or just the AVR?

I'm also curious as to whether PS3 is now able to play MKV? I know a couple of weeks ago mine certainly wasn't able to, and I haven't had any notices regarding updates?

I was of the understanding that Sony recently released a firmware update for the ps3 which forces it to check some code or other on mkv's that you ask it to play in an effort to curb piracy. Sony Pictures trying to protect themselves i guess. The result is that the ps3 will play 30 seconds or so of the file and then tell you it needs to be authenticated somehow...

I would imagine it will feature in Sony built DLNA tv's soon too, if not already

Pretty sure mine is THIS one, or a very similar one (possible superceded by this one). I've had it about 2 years now and i'm really impressed with it.
My harmony one works great with all my gear so i'm happy with my setup.

This and an AppleTV2 (with XBMC installed)

are you sure?? - my ps3 plays 1080p MKV's perfectly fine- stream from my server. Full DTS and everything.

Pretty sure PS3 played MKV's from the get go, or very near after release.
I think that's why MKV files became so popular, cos yuo could stream em from the PS3.

You opinion is a bit extreme and to be honest slightly silly, there are plenty of pretty decent all in one home cineam systems out there that people are more than happy with it's all about budget and expectations.
