Broken down and cant find 1st or 2nd Gear!

I drove a BMW 320 from Swansea to Brynamman (18ish miles including city centre traffic) with only 5th gear so I'm pretty sure with some delicate clutch work and some revs that you can manage without first or second to get it to the garage.

Bet the clutch loved that :D

I'm not even mad, that's impressive.

As suggested, reverse until you find an up hill and then roll down from that in 3rd and you should have enough momentum to get you all the way to the garage :D

(recently had a service and found there was no oil and no coolant, guess that explained the high temperatures)

oh dear, do you not think to check the oil and coolant levels from time to time? you know.. it's a part of motoring.

my car is a 1.1 206, 8 valve, T reg (1999) has done 107,000 and is on its last legs (recently had a service and found there was no oil and no coolant, guess that explained the high temperatures)

I was able to set off in 4th in my 1.2 6 valve polo so you can definitely manage to do it in 3rd with an extra cylinder :p

No i dont, its not the first time this has happened either (no oil/coolant).

I should i know do more checks, that is my fault its only recently (last 6 months) it has been taking a lot more oil/coolant. - Which i guess is an indication that the car wont last much longer.

Anyways im going to have alook for the gear linkage tonight if i cant find or get 1st gear in im reversing all the way to the nearest garage.

Many thanks for all your replies

As mentioned above, you'll have no problem pulling away in 3rd with a few extra revs. It'll be a lot safer than reversing the whole way!

Ok so i ended up reversing all the way to the garage took me about an hour.

Did it dead in the night (midnight).

It has had a :-
New Gear Linkage - £42
OSF Shocktop mount - £82
Tracking - £22

It also needs a new drive shaft i havnt had this done - this will set me back £120.

Surely third gear had to be better than reverse? How far did you have to go?

just under 2 miles, took the side streets best i could as they were a lot quiter.

Got afew dirty looks off other motorist but i made it in the end without a scratch on me!

It felt like i had just driven 300 miles in 1st after i had finished.

 Why did you reverse when you could have used 3rd?
