Getting christened today

Well that's me done. Was actually a really nice service. He got me to stand up in front of about 80 people and asked me to make a load of promises.

We then went over to the font and everyone crowded around and he splashed water on my head and said some nice words.

Regardless of peoples views on religion, including my own, it was a bloody nice morning and I feel more connected now to the place I'm getting married at. That's important to me.

So let's not get busy and start bashing religion, I dd it for my own reasons and Now I get to marry a fitty and get smashed in heaven with the 'G' man.

Booyah.

That sounds like the biggest mockery of baptism I've ever heard.

Sorry, but it doesn't sound like you did it for the right reasons at all.

I know we weren't supposed to be getting into a religion debate but I think if that's your reasoning for doing it... Well, I can't really say any more without ranting I don't think.

yes. shame on op. surely he just lied to everyone in that church - jus so he can get married in a nice building.

At least he feels connected, though.

God I went to a christening not long ago, really didn't want to go but did out of courtesy. Most boring hour of my life. It's amazing the kind of beliefs people possess.

Not really. It's probably important to his wife to be that they get married in a church (as it is for many). And if the only way to get that done is to be baptised then I think it's a very noble and kind thing for him to do. I'm an atheist, but if I needed it done for some important reason then I'd happily oblige.

Also to get baptised at a 'proper' age is far better than being forced into it as a non-consenting child.

I've discussed marriage with my girlfriend (not as a serious idea, just what we both want when we decide to get married to whoever later in life) and she wants a church wedding and I like the idea of the traditionalness of that. If that means I need to go through some quick and meaningless (to me) ceremony then that's fine.

I've never been to a baptism, but may be going to one in Ireland later in the year. I'm looking forward to it, apparently it's 30 minutes of horrible boredom and religion and then a day of getting totally slaughtered with the father of the child and friends. :D

You sound like a joke OP.

Surprised your soon to be wife would have wanted you to have gotten baptised with that attitude to be honest....unless you hid your true feelings?

Chill, at no point gave I stated the degree of my faith and nor will I. If you remember the whole point if this thread was to ask advice. I also wanted to keep my reasons light hearted as I certainly do not believe an Internet forum is a god place for discussing them.

So let's not make assumptions or judgements please. If you disagree just remember I'll burn my balls in hell as far as you're concerned which I'm sure will bring some comfort and relief to you.

I thought about 90% of married couples already did that.
I know for a fact at least the last 10 weddings I've been to in Churches, the bride & groom had zero religious beliefs but went through with the rituals.

I see the bullies are crawling again out at the mere mention of religion.....

Leave the guy alone, either answer his question or don't....he isn't forcing his views on you, why would you insist on forcing yours on him.

Good luck in your Wedding Fastwuntz, and I'm pleased you enjoyed your baptism.

A couple of quotes from scripture for you on the day of the public declaration of your faith.
“Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and in your name drive out demons and perform many miracles?’ Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!’ (Matt. 7:21-23)

“Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.” (Matt. 7:24-27)
May your faith be strong in our Lord Jesus.

Somewhat pointless dont you think? If he believes in God then all is well and he was getting it done for the right reasons. If he doesn't believe in God the above words are utterly meaningless.

What are you jabbering on about? What an absurd, and offensive, thing to say.
