looking for a nas box thats easy to use/setup....hold 1 or 2 drives....usb and or esata port...gigabit lan but not to fussed on that as 100mb is ok for streaming media i think....thanks

not really got a budget in mind as off yet...really looking for something people have used and find them ok for streaming over a network without any problems like log in issues that i am getting using my pc...also whats the difference between the top 2 you have linked to thanks.

Synology DS212J and a couple of drives in RAID1
I second this - I've got a 212j with one drive, will get another one when HDD prices drop a little bit more.

The difference between the top two is that the 111 is newer - the last two digits in Synology's product names indicate production year.

I'm running a Synology DS209 and can't recommend it highly enough. Synology support their products well (I had a fan issue with mine and they sent a replacement within days) and regularly add new features via DSM updates (Diskstation Manager - the software it runs).

My only regret is that I didn't get a bigger (4 bay? model). It's surprisingly how quick you fill up 2 x 2Tb drives (running in RAID1 so only getting 1 x 2Tb drive space with an external 2Tb USB drive hooked up for backup). It happily streams all my music and movies simultaneously and also makes for a fantastic download box.

Not cheap, compared to a home built server, but very easy to use and doesn't take up much space.

ok been looking into them....some have esata ports on them...can you connect them to your pc to transfer files or are esata ports for you to add more drives onto them...

For adding more drives. I'm not aware of any solution to connect them to your PC to seed or move data.

ahhhh a old icy box that i had does that ....but then again could never get it to work or connect to it over the network lol....i do have gigabit switch and port on my pc...so should be suffice.....copying say 1 gig from your pc over the network on gigabit...how long does it take roughly .

You can have two separate drives, no problem. :) And yes, if correctly configured it'll show up on all your devices. It supports SMB, AFP and NFS for file transfers, possibly more (haven't tried!) so any device that support one of those protocols will work.

so i have my pc setup at the moment to do this...so it will do exactly the same...for laptops that us it now? sorry for the dumb questions but trying to find if its for me.

And also has built in DLNA and iTunes servers so media players and iPads/iPods etc. can see the content easily.

Make sure if you are going to stream mkv's from the synology that you get one with a beefy cpu, some of the older models with the Marvell Kirkwood mv6281 cpu can't handle the load, I know my 409 goes to 100% cpu on some mkv's so I've switched to just using the Synology as a storage device and streaming using Serviio
