I currently have an iPhone 3GS, and I was looking to keep the phone for longer, but I didn't want to get tied into another contract as I am holding out till the iPhone 5 if it is any good.

I liked the idea of GiffGaff, cheap sim free option, I mainly use my phone for internet, and text, and do some calls now and again but I do not use my phone as much as I used to.

Do you think I am going the right way about it? :)

Also, how does GiffGaff work? You just get their sim and top up monthly? Or can you do a direct debit to them?

I have looked into the Orange sim free too, but couldn't quite work out what is better.

Ideally I want to be spending as little as possible, maybe £10-£20 a month.

Giffgaff use 'goodybags' as their version of tariffs. Overall, they are the cheapest network around and they use the O2 network for coverage, so make sure you have a good O2 signal.

You can see the various goodybags on the site. It operates as a 1 month rolling contract and will continue like that until you cancel it (as far as I know).

As you have a 3GS, you don't need to worry about a micro-SIM, so just go ahead and order.

Once you've got the SIM, just top it up with the goodybag you want and that should be it.

I moved to Giff gaff a few months ago, and I have been very happy. I have a 3GS and was thinking along similar lines to yourself, that I could put off the upgrade until later. Yes, there are now significantly better phones on the Market, but my 3GS does all the functions I need just fine, therefore upgrading immediately seemed a waste of money.

I went from paying £30+/month on O2 to £15 on Giff gaff, and I think I will prob drop down to £10 next month.

You do have to visit the site every month to buy the goodybag, it's not automatic. Well you can queue up a second goodybag to kick in a month after the first one but other than that you have to buy a new goodybag each month to get the free minutes/texts and internet.

You also need to buy credit to start with as well don't you?

You need to buy £10 credit and then buy a goody-bag on top was my understanding. Then after that you just buy the goody-bags

Someone said you have to top up £10 manually but someone said you can do it automatically?

I'd rather it be automatically so I can leave it as it is. - I will like to transfer my number too, unless the number I get is a nice number. :)

£10 a month seems sensible to me, better than the £35 I was paying a month.

You buy £10 airtime credit to activate the sim card. You can then use this to buy your first £10 goodybag leaving you with 0 airtime balance but 250 minutes, unlimited texts and internet.
Next month you have to sign into the site and buy another goodybag you can't get it to do it automatically. Other than the 1 month queuing as I mentioned before.

Oh and remember to go via a referal link for an extra £5 credit when you first top up and activate your sim. I'd love to post mine here but you aren't allowed to. Trust me if you want though! :)

edit:
People might be getting confused with the auto top up functionality. This will take money off your card automatically if you airtime balance drops below a set amount. You still have to go in and buy a goodybag with this airtime credit or you will be using the PAYG rates.
Giffgaff don't currently support direct debits.

I have a three tarrif 30 day rolling contract on £10 a month, 100 mins, 3000 texts, 1gb internet

does me just fine :)

But GiffGaff is the same price but 250mins, unlimited texts and unlimited data.

Some people aren't happy with 'just fine' :p.

It's O2 they don't have the best 3G signal. However it's great and dirt cheap.

depends on your area tbh, i will agree though that in certain places i dont get any signal.

in my home my mobile needs to be upstairs, same with my mates house.

but i always leave it in my bedroom anyway when im at home and only have it in my pocket when im out and about.

Everything depends on area. But O2 are known to be one of the poorer 3G providers accross the UK, which is why they are spending 1million a day on infrastructure.
Of course some areas will be great and others poor, but again generally O2 coverage for 3G is poorer than the competition.
