What is your favourite Historic quote or speech?

"Indeed, it has been said that democracy is the worst form of government except all those other forms that have been tried"

Winston Churchill 11/11/1947 House of Commons

"We shall go on to the end, we shall fight in France, we shall fight on the seas and oceans, we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the air, we shall defend our Island, whatever the cost may be, we shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender,"

Winston Churchill, June 4, 1940, House of Commons

Incredible and inspiring quote. It makes me proud every time I see it. :)

It certainly is. It's also probably the most obvious choice in these threads too. Gotta love the Churchill quotes though, I particularly like this one:

“The best argument against democracy is a five minute conversation with the average voter.”

"We'll fight them, sir, 'til hell freezes over, and then, sir, we will fight them on the ice." A Confederate soldier at Gettysburg

I am come amongst you, as you see, at this time, not for my recreation and disport, but being resolved, in the midst and heat of the battle, to live and die amongst you all; to lay down for my God, and for my kingdom, and my people, my honour and my blood, even in the dust.

I know I have the body but of a weak and feeble woman; but I have the heart and stomach of a king, and of a king of England too, and think foul scorn that Parma or Spain, or any prince of Europe, should dare to invade the borders of my realm; to which rather than any dishonour shall grow by me, I myself will take up arms, I myself will be your general, judge, and rewarder of every one of your virtues in the field.

Queen Elizabeth I to the troops, 1588

I have always found Martin Niemöller's quote very inspirational:

First they came for the communists,
and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a communist.

Then they came for the trade unionists,
and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a trade unionist.

Then they came for the Jews,
and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a Jew.

Then they came for the Catholics,
and I didn't speak out because I was Protestant.

Then they came for me
and there was no one left to speak out for me.
