I love religeous threads! I want to know if...

Why is it irrational to beleive in a higher power? Do you think that anything at all that you don't believe in must be irrational?

Okay I'll bite. It's irrational to believe in something for which there is no evidence. And no, a book written by human beings does not count as evidence.

Search youtube for user name - Shayrah, video - Atheists Have Faith.

No its not a crazy theist video, its a rather smart Atheist woman, but it has some swearies.

Heres one of her videos without any swearies:

(Not really that great a video, just the only one I saw without any swearies).

But you have no evidence to the contrary, does that then make you equally irrational.

Check the video I referenced at the top of this post for your answer. It answers your query perfectly.

Nope. The burden of proof is on the people who assert a thing does exist.

What? Who decided that? Is it a man made law or something?

God can't be proved to exist in whatever form or disproved, therefore will only ever be subject to philosophical debate.

You claim there is no god yet you can't provide evidence but thats you done. I believe there is a god but I have to provide evidence otherwise I'm just wrong?

I know that magic carpets and genies dont exist, but unfortunately I cannot prove it.

But even if you examined every carpet in the world, that still wouldnt be proof that magic carpets dont exist because any magic carpets would simply be hiding their magic from you.

Therefore magic carpets are real, and you are illogical and wrong if you disagree because you cant prove that they arent real.

I've made no claims whatsoever. For all I know, there may indeed be some kind of telepathic sky fairy called God - I just think it's really really unlikely because it's an absurd claim without any evidence or reasoning to support it. It's up there with claiming the moon is made of cheese. I can't disprove it, but there's no reason to believe it's true either.

Hence why it should be left to personal opinion without the onus being with either side.

I believe in a higher power, it helps me through any of the more difficult times, I don't however expect everyone to believe the same as me, and I don't expect everyone to prove the non-existence of a higher power, unlike some people on here, who seem to believe that they are always right without a shred of evidence to back them up.

You asked why it's irrational to believe in a higher power, and I answered your question. To reiterate, whether a higher power exists or not, there's not a single shred of evidence to suppose that it does. Believing in a thing when there's no reason to is irrational.

The (man written) book told them to... on a more serious note Religion is built on faith and not facts so the argument gets approached completely different by both sides and so always ends up the same cycle with fact vs faith.

But there is a reason to for a lot of people, just because you don't understand the reason doesn't make it irrational, they could claim your being irrational in your denial. Of course thats beyond your level of comprehension obviously.
