What does everyone think of current gpu prices

8800gt spoilt me and I come to expect similar performance/price ratio from my cards now- and this ratio it just does not work nowdays:(

I have an 8800gt in my amd 939 system and my 5870 in my current system. Both I think were value for money for what I paid. I don't think amd should have based their prices against the competitions older tech and set their own prices based on previous amd cards then the market would be in a better state than it's in now.

Jeez, could you imagine how more popular the 79xx series would be then?

I think I would have caved and just got one then, and shoved the GTX 470 into my old system, which is now my mom's. ( if only she could appreciate the power she has there haha)

If they priced it aggressively like they did with the 58xx series, the current Nvidia line up might have taken a price cut as well.

Competition is absolutely amazing for the customer.

I think they're vastly overpriced. No wonder PC gaming has struggled with these prices. You just can't expect most gamers to pay £300+ for a GPU alone when they can get an Xbox for £150 and play all of the same games. Yes there are disadvantages to consoles but there's also a lot of advantages (bigger community, ease of gaming with friends, earlier releases, better optimisation, form factor, gaming on big screen TVs, etc).

I prefer PC gaming, but if it's gonna take off again these GPU manufacturers need to stop the ridiculousness.

thats like saying motoring is vastly overpriced because a porsche costs £200,000... you don't need a porsche to drive the same as you dont need a £200 video card to game

i bet any game on the market will run fine on a £60 6750 as long as you dont put all the setting up too high...

I think £400 is acceptable when the card blows away the last generation. But that doesn't happen much thesedays. The 7970 is a disappointment to me. It's a £350 card at best and even that is pushing it.

Personally, £300 is my limit on a GPU by principle, and it has to be a big jump over the last gen, too. So basically, as an AMD user for the last two generations, I'm really hoping Nvidia has something special coming, or I'll be skipping this generation altogether (unless prices are enticing).

You would be amazed at how many people use a sensible system for their gaming.

It's the minority who have over powered systems, and an even smaller one that have multiple GPUs or screens.

The 7970 is the first "Stupid, irresponsible and over priced" GPU I have bought since I bought a 3DLabs Oxygen in 1999.

Since then it was (I got married then so finances became tight :D )

Voodoo 5500 PCI (£99 in the bargain bin at PC world. Epic bargain) in 2000.

Geforce 2 MX 64mb (worst card I ever had. Slow, and loved to artefact). Was a Prophet card by Hercules.

Radeon 9200 Pro ($140 bought for NFSU)

Geforce 5900 Ultra, bios flashed to 5950 (got in a pricing error for $180 or so when it should have been $400+)

Time out....

Geforce 9800 GT with an Accelero cooler. £150 2008.

GTX 280 XXX from a place that sells refurbed XFX cards. £185 2009.

5770 Crossfire £265 Jan 2010.

Geforce GTX 470 £174.99 Oct 2010 (I hated Crossfire)

6970 2gb December £287 (failed)

7970 stupid and irresponsible but whatever £439 Jan 2011.

Moral of this story: Don't get married... Or be forever doomed with ****** graphics cards

I paid roughly £270 for my 6800GT in 2004, but then I had just turned 16 and was working almost all the time over the summer.
I got a release day 6950 2GB and paid £200 for it. I felt it was a good deal. I would go up to £300 for a card if I deemed it worth it, but I don't think I will ever spend so much on a graphics card. Even today my 6950 gives fantastic performance for the price.
We in the UK get bummed for the poor £ and bummed again for 20% VAT - both of which hike the price up.

I most definately like consoles but I do prefer PC gaming. However when you consider the 360 os now 7 years old and still not out of date, it is a much better gaming investment than a PC graphics card.

What does everyone think of current gpu prices
Depends whether we are talking high, middle or low end.

Low End (up to £80)

There are some very good cards within this price bracket, but I would opt for an AMD 6750 OR 6770. Both will offer a good gaming experience at upto 1680x1050 and be reasonable at 1920x1080. They also pack plenty of features such as GPU hardwaer decoding for video, multiple oututs including HDMI, plus multi-monitor output. For the price they are a bargain.
My verdict: Great value for money.
Best Card: 6770

Middle (£80-£150)
GTX560's and 6870's offer decent performance at upto 1920x1200, but most modern games will struggle with full settings. The bargain cards within this bracket are probably the GTX460 and 6850 for about a hundred notes each.
My verdict: Very good value for money
Best Card: GTX560

High End (£150-£250)
This is a very competative price range and there are many cards to choose from. My personal favorites would be the 6950 (especially is you find one that unlocks) and the GTX570. Both will play most modern game on max settings at 1920x1200, and can even be pushed further if needed. GTX560TI's offer very good value and can come close to 6950/6970/GTX570's, but they don't quite cut it at very high resolutions.
My verdict: Good value.
Best Card: 6950 2GB

Ultra High End (£250 to £500)
The GTX580 and 7970 are the two main contenders within this section. Both offer tremendous performance, but the 7970 is clearly faster due to it being "next generation". With the GTX580 costing ~£350 and the 7970 ~£450 neither are great value, and I would not buy either until NVidia launches their true 7970 rival in 1-2 months time. The only reason the 580 has maintained such a high price (for a last gen card) is becasue the 7970 was launched MASSIVELY overpriced. Both cards need to drop by £100 to make them a worthwhile purchase.
My verdict: Poor value.
Best Card: 7970 (with reluctance due to excessively high price)

Ultra-Ultra High End (£500 plus)
There are only two mainstream cards within this class, the GTX590 and 6990. Both cost ~£600 and both offer very similar performance from their dual GPU's. Both are also "last gen", and anyone who buys them now at current prices is mad.
My verdict: Extremely poor value. Wait a month or two until next gen's 7990 arrives.
Best Card: It's a tie, avoid both.

Summary

Low to mid end cards are priced very well and offer decent performance for the money. High cards can offer decent perfornance at reasonable prices, but Ultra Hgh end and above offer very very poor value. For example, two GTX460's in SLI @ £200 will offer similar performance to a GTX580 @ £350, and two GTX560's @ ~£260 will be close to the 7970 @ ~£450. The high end prices should tumble within a month or two once dust settles from the 7970 launch and real competition arrives.

Much too expensive and not really needed. Makes me think AMD have rolled out another generation within a year or so of the last one, wet there index finger, stuck it in the air to see which way the wind was blowing and then priced it at a stupendous £450 or so pounds, sitting back and saying, there you go, buy that while we work on the next gen for 2013.

Meanwhile the consumer is just going to stick a middle digit in the air and huff so what do you want me to do with that AMD ? My 6950 (eg) is fine as it is.

Why is it you never see high end (or middle for that matter) in a PC being sold in PC World ?

Rest my case.

oh and I`m not biased Nvidia will do the same come March or whenever.

Because 99% of people who go into PC World to buy a PC know next to nothing about PC hardware. They just look at price and gigabytes/terrabytes. I think Dell are probably the only big PC builder who supply capable gaming systems (usually at a high premiun).

I am getting so sick of having to mind my P's and Q's on this forum and being constantly reminded who pays for this and that.
