Runescape (brilliant game if you actually get in to it - seen as a bit childish nowadays though and it's really dumbed down compared to what it was a few years ago).

I logged in a few weeks ago to my account from 4-5 years ago and played around for an hour or so and yes, it's like the game is now aimed at 11 year olds that'll grab their parents credit cards to pay for membership :( On the positive my rares have risen in price in the region of about 10000%...

Ah, and OP if you can afford fees I would definitely suggest RIFT. Me and a mate have been playing it since release and it's great fun; prefer it to WOW.;)

Guild Wars seems like a obvious choice to me.

Its been out for years, so plenty of content to play with. Its a game that really comes into its own when you play with someone you know.

Three huge campaigns and the eye of the north expansion to play, plenty to get your teeth into. Enjoy.

Is Guild Wars free to play though?

I did try Age Of Conan but got bored in the first 30 minutes. I just don't think mmo's are my thing really which is a shame. Seems I am missing out on some good stuff.

Everquest 2 has a free to play subscription (although is a bit limited in terms of what classes you can choose etc), has tons of content and works well with two players levelling together. PVP is completely optional as well (I think they still run dedicated PVP servers so just choose a PVE server).

not an mmorpg but what about somethign like world of tanks and play as a platoon?
quite a few of us on ocuk play this and its great fun :)

LotRO has a good F2P model. You can get quite far and quite high level without paying. Infact technically you can do everything without paying. But it requires a LOT of tedious effort. Still you can get a long way through the game before subbing if you decide you still like it at that point.
