Will we still be gaming on Desktop PC's in the next 5 years?

With general desktop use, i can see everyone using tablets in the future, its happening now with the ipad and soon windows 8 etc. But what about desktop gaming? Will this ever transfer over to tablets? If so how will it be done? And will it be within the next 5 years?

lol dont be silly....

maybe in 5 years a tablet will be able to output to a large screen tv at grpahics and resolution that matchs the xbox360....

cutting edge will still be desktop pcs because everything has to start big before its made small enough to fit inside a mobile device, even gaming laptops are huge, get hot and arent really an alterantive to a nice desktop for most serious gamers

sure it is unless you want to game on a small screen at a fairly low res at 30fps sitting nexst to a plug, because battery capacity/weight/size isnt going anywhere in the next 5 years

Maybe the next 5 years is a bit to soon or maybe it's not, but if the masses will be using tablet's for everyday use within the next 5 years, surely that's where the big dev and hardware companies are going to be focusing on?

I'd worry about consoles before tablets, Have you tried to play an FPS on a tablet pc? its horrid :/

I agree with arknor. Pcs will always be the cutting edge of technology. It's going to be a niche market compared to comsoles and tablets which are so mainstream, but it'll never die out.

next 5 years?

what were things like 5 years ago? about the same as now...

I predict things will be about the same in 5 years... maybe quad core CPU and 6670 performance gfx will be the norm in main stream...

high end systems will be about 2x - 2.5x more powerful...

i dont see the big devs putting much effort into facebook or iphone games..

atleast all the facebook is going to kill pc gaming rubbish didnt last very long

HTML5, WebGL and other initiatives will merge browser gaming with 'proper' gaming.

More cross-platform gaming between all the new systems.

There's no getting away from the fact that PC systems will always have the most power. Trying to cool 300w of components in small, enclosed console case is never going to work, let alone dual-GPU configurations.

Personally hate gaming on touch screens, and I love my FPS games which I'd never leave the PC for. I will always game with a mouse + KB, of course I could use them with a tablet I guess? but then what is the point of doing that over my PC :p

Tablets /shudder .. Overpriced toys!

PC's will still be leading the tech race, the next gen of consoles will be a few years old. Tablets will be extinct and just a bad memory (I wish!)

I am just getting to old (26) and scared that technology is moving to fast and my desktop will retire and never get used. I am really not ready for tablet's even in the next 5 years. :(

The only thing that would replace having the requirement for an expensive desktop gaming PC would be services such as OnLive. But as those services are hopelessly ahead of where broadband infrastructure needs to be to support them in almost all countries, and will be for the foreseeable future, I wouldn't worry about writing your plans for future gaming pcs off just yet.
