BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

Well, after months of um-ing and ah-ing I've finally pushed the buy button.
Goodbye 7/0.9 Be, hello 40/10 BT!
Install date is 15th February.

It's only you that's got a problem, if it's really upsetting you that much start a new thread
Annoyed is a more accurate word but OK I will :)

Sorry if I came accross a bit short. Just get a bit annoyed seeing the missconception that Infinity = FTTC. It doesn't help anyone looking to get FTTC and only discovering they have a choice after signing the 18 month Infinity contract.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding it, but AFAIK you'll have a distinct fiber pull from your cab. Presumably it'll be cost dependent on that distance, and there would be no savings associated with anyone near to you getting it, just that your cab is enabled for FTTC.

I think it's great personally, I'd possibly even pay that if I were planning to buy the 'family home', or if I was quoted on the cheaper end of the scale.

Hell yes! It will be twice as fast. I'm mainly interested in the 20Mb/s upstream. ;)

The general customer trial is starting tomorrow.

Would you notice a massive difference between 40mb and 80mb? I have 3.5mb d/l and everything loads quite quickly for me lol.

You'll undoutedly see diminishing returns in particular in cases where you are bottlenecked by the server. Realistically going from 40mbit to 80mbit doesn't really open any doors in terms of content either i.e. streaming etc should have been fine beforehand.

I'd say the biggest gains from changes like this will likely be people in shared households with a lot of heavy internet users (typically student households).

Apparently my village will be getting FTTP next month. Does this mean i will have to pay a silly amount for installation?

Yeah, just what I thought. 40mb would be fine for me, only another year to wait (hopefully).

Ah, cheers :)

Any news when this is then going to be rolled out and if you get the uplift for free or if the 80/20 is extra or another tier package?

Cost of 80/20 will be done to each ISP. I expect most will charge more for 80/20, like they do for 10Mpbs over a 2Mbps upload. It'll be a way to match Virgin's choice of broadband speeds / costs.
