Retrospective: Grim Fandango

There were only 2 left apparently, £1.99 with free shipping can't be bad!

The website does seem a bit amateurish but has the 'feel' of being legit.

Absolute quality game! Picked up a copy for peanuts a few years back with a view to having a nostalgic playthru - turned out one of the disks was missing though :(

Not seen it for many years but i'm guessing the artwork still looks good, love that style.

Really been meaning to pick this up for ages but never got round to it. Just found a place selling it for £1.99. I take it that it is unlikely to work on Win7 64?

"Item supplied in Public Domain format, provided as-is and in a clear protective wallet."

That one?

It will play, you need a modded launcher/installer I believe.

Grim, Throttle and Tentacle. The holy trinity of the adventure genre.

Rest in Peace - I dare not dig you up in case you don't match up to my memories!

Good call on them 3, Modern adventures (rubbish investigation types) dont have any substance. Even the monkey Island follow on recently looked poor IMO. I do like the Broken Sword games and recently completed Broken Sword DC on my iphone :)

Overrated game I still have my PC original retail box & remember how poor the controls were & obscure the puzzle solutions.

Not a classic IMO at all far from it!!!

If people know any UK sources please post them - I seriously doubt OcUK has any in stock so they won't be a competitor. Failing that, please send me a Trust message with the details!

The controls weren't great but poor is harsh. The only blot on an otherwise impeccable game.

Meh, the controls weren't that bad. Similar to but better than Resident Evil's, in my opinion.

This was the final hoorah of the point-and-click adventure, trying to fight against the surging tide that was 3D. It worked wonderfully with Grim Fandango. It failed miserably with Escape From Monkey Island.

:o

Obscure puzzle make the game, it would be boring to rush through and not have to work anything out, or having to try different combinations to see the results. The useless controls are dwarfed by the plot, characters, music and art direction.

For anyone interested, here's Tim Schafer's puzzle document from 1996.

http://www.orderoftheflame.co.uk/RandomImages/Grim-Fandango-Puzzle-Document.pdf

Lots of extra content detailed that didn't make it into the game. :)

Always had a soft spot for the game tho I never played it to the end - it came out just as I was getting into games that had well through out control interfaces/proper freemove and it just felt a bit restrictive to play.

I always failed to this 'classic' game to work for me under windows 7. Which was a shame, as I'd love to replay the whole 4 year story.

Excellent game Tim Schafer really did excel with this one..!! Even today I'm sure the graphics, music and whole production would stand up well against many of the latest crop of so called 3D graphic adventures..

Might have another go, still got the media disc for this somewhere. Lost the big box years ago, purchased it on day of release....

This thread has made me want to go dig out my copy.

This thread did, I have the install CD's. I installed it last night, using an installer that works under Windows 7 and fired up Grim Fandango...

It really has aged well IMO. Sadly, stuck at 640 x 480 4:3 screen but doesn't really take away from the game...

Worked perfectly fine with my 360 gamepad, sadly game still crashes to desktop....
