are we going to be financially browbeaten into accepting black boxes?

the AA is introducing black boxes to be installed in cars in return for a reduction in insurance premiums for certain drivers.

is this something we are likely to see a lot more insurance companies offering over the coming years. and do you guys think we are likely to see premiums soar for anyone NOT wanting to be tracked 24/7

and this made me lol

Extreme speeds would be greeted with "a stern email" to the driver

I dread to think about the volume of e-mails that some of us on here would receivce under something like this. i mean i've only got 5 gig of webmail storage :( wonder what they class as an "extreme" speed, i'd imagine in this nanny country we live in anything above 80mph. would make for epic bragging rights though forwarding your latest stern e-mail to your mates to boast of your maximum speeds achieved

Apparently the Co-Op already offer a reduction in premium if you take a black box.

I don't see the big deal if it is used to provide a reduction, though I understand the fear that in the long term the carrot could be switched for a stick. But then if that forced people to drive more carefully wouldn't that be a good thing? People don't drive carefully because they don't fear the consequences of rear ending a bus or going backwards into a tree at 93mph, but they do fear not being able to afford to live.

As for the extreme speeds thing... Obey the speed limit, or write to the government and complain about it. Don't moan about how you're such a great driver and you "drive at a safe speed for the conditions". Most people don't drive at safe speeds for the conditions, and the speed limit is for them, but it applies to everyone. And hell no, I'm not saying I never speed, but I'm also not pretending I do it because I'm a driving God. I do it because sometimes I want to get from A to B that bit quicker.

I'm sure there will be a way of tricking these boxes :)

And I'm sure that anything that you can think of will already have been thought of by the engineers, and that anything they haven't thought of will constitute insurance fraud and will result in a trip to federal pound me in the ass prison.

As said at least one insurer allready do this. Tbh it's makes sense for a lot of drivers. If you drive sensibly why wouldn't you want to get a massive reduction in premium. Also loads of info for crashes.
I do think it will come more standard will take a long time though.

I'm sure there will be a way of tricking these boxes :) No way will they be paired to the cars just yet.

The technology has been around for a long time already, its heavily used for fleet tracking already by many companies. We use the system ourselves for work vans, as soon as the engine is started it's on we can see live location of the van, speed, excessive braking. All sorts :)

You hear more and more that new drivers are taking up things like this to cut insurance prices, and driving curfew times too. IE not being allowed to drive between 0:00 and 6:00 for example.

If I was starting out now, I'd be all over that

Yeah, when are vans get replaced they'll have trackers :( and speed limited.

If it provided a significant saving I'd probably have one of these. I'm officially a boring driver now. I rarely go above 75, I very rarely drive at peak times and I no longer get a thrill from throwing the car around corners.

Can tell you're now married and have a child :p

Once they've taken any kind of fun out of driving with the boxes they will probably move to robot cars and it will seem quite normal not to drive.

Waste of time. The real causes of accidents is ppl not indicating, tailgating etc a GPS device doesn't give an indication about whether you're just a bad driver

These make me mad. Mad in my head. Like the price of fuel hasn't got everyone driving badly enough already.:mad::mad:

This smiley is perfect btw.

This will be my exact face when I watch somebody driving like Mr Bean because they have one of these in their car.

You could stop them working, easily.

If audited you have no chance though. Mileage recorded at install date, compared to registered GPS mileage at a later date. If the difference is beyond tolerances then it's obvious it has been tampered with.

For one of my cars these would be a great idea. My commuting workhorse rarely sees above 25mph through the centre of London so I'd happily take one to keep the price down. However, as said, the still high chance of me having an accident will not be diminished one jot because it will have nothing to do with speed.

The weekend car I'm less keen on having one of these for ;)

I'd rather pay the extra or take the risk and drive without insurance.

Our roads are turning into a massive joke, going to be very pointless in buying any performance vehicle any time soon.
