So having a mini argument here with a friend who says Gaming is not a sport but Airsofting is.

So come on GD what do you think :D :p

Im going back to being sad sat behind in the warm and playing my game :D

As in computer gaming? No, it's not a sport. It can be highly skilled and competitive activity (although not when I play) but it's not a sport, in much the same way that snooker, chess and darts aren't sports.

No, I don't think so. It's a competitive activity, but not a sport.

It may one day become a sport though.

You are both wrong. Neither are sports! :)

sport   [spawrt, spohrt] Show IPA
noun
1.
an athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature, as racing, baseball, tennis, golf, bowling, wrestling, boxing, hunting, fishing, etc.
2.
a particular form of this, especially in the out of doors.
3.
diversion; recreation; pleasant pastime.
4.
jest; fun; mirth; pleasantry: What he said in sport was taken seriously.
5.
mockery; ridicule; derision: They made sport of him.

depends which definition you wanna go with

So is airsoft more or a sport than gaming is?

It's perhaps closer to being a sport in that it involves both competitive action and physical activity but I'm not totally convince it merits the title of being a sport.

Actually it is a recognised sport.

You're right but I'd have to disagree with the definition used - it seems the IOC define a sport as an event where competition leads to the award of medals which seems ridiculously nebulous to me.

Ah but you see you can't just pick a definition and apply it out of context. We can eliminate (4) and (5) immediately as not applicable.

I would eliminate (3) as the context would not appear to be a competitive one in this definition.

Which leaves (1) and (2) which specifically stipulate an "athletic activity". The only game that would seem to fit this bill is Dance Dance Revolution.

Thus we can conclude that whilst DDR could be a sport, Battlefield 3 isn't :p
