Because for most people energy efficiency and being 'green' is a priority above performance and cost. Oh wait...

The 7970, if gamed on for three hours a night, will save you £4.55 a year over owning a 6970. All of this "green" gonads is just that, gonads.
A current gen ~£120 card is faster than an ~£80 card based on 2½ year old technology, there's a shocker
But it's not as fast as a £90 HD 6850
No, its not just you, AMD has truly made themselves a laughing stock with this. Green? Performance per watt? Yeah right
Even Buldozer compared favorable to their own older CPUs, it was only inferior to Intel (maybe it consumed less energy?
). But here old amd is superior and cheaper - what an epic fail.

It is about performance. That is what these cards are for, if it wasn't you would be using on-board graphics.
Why are people defending such poor advancement in GPU power vs Price. I don't understand, "I can pay more money for less performance" is pretty much what you guys are saying.
I paid £230 for my 5850 OVER 2 YEARS ago, if I spend the same amount on a GPU now I barely get a performance increase. New cards of the same range should BLOW old cards of the same range out of the water!
(For all you selective readers out there I am not comparing my 5850 to the 77XX range, let me make that VERY CLEAR)

I'd quit whilst I were ahead if I were you. Honestly, the whole internet disagrees with you.
The 7770 is a poor card. Poor performance, poor price, poor comparative performance with cheaper cards.
Infact it gets its arse kicked all over the place by cards costing £30 less.
You must be laughing at yourself.
The majority of people looking for a graphics card on this forum are interested in performance full stop and how much they have to pay to get it.
They wouldn't be interested in a HD 7770 because the performance/watt is better than a HD 6850.
They would be interested in a HD 6850 because the performance is at least as good as a HD 7770 for around three quarters the price.

Please, when were talking cards like the 7770 people expect to find value for money as not all of us can afford £400 for a top end product. Years ago mid range cards like would offer 2/3 the performance of the top end card at a half the price (8800 GT to the 8800 GTX for example). To be fair to AMD their only really competing against themselves here so I doubt their worried if it doesn't sell all that well at first.
I have to say AMD have left me feeling depressed, I just hope either the 7850 or the 7870 pulls a big surprise and becomes a consumer champion.

As with all but the ultra high range cards and crossfire/sli setups there is probably about £10 a year max extra on your electricity bill between these things.
Plus who gives a crap about the efficiency of the architecture if it costs a load more to buy, performs less than a cheaper card and will probably save you naff all a year extra electricity?

Something I just posted elsewhere.
A 60 watt lamp for 12 hrs is (60 x 12) =720 watts or 0.72 Kwh. At about 12p per unit this would cost you about 9p. Less than 1p per hour.
If you game three hours a day you will consume 40w more per hour (not the 60w light bulb above) thus you will save about 2.5p a day owning a 5870 over a GTX 470.
Let's say you game 3 hours a day every single day you would spend -
1 year = 365.242199 days
365.242199 x 2.5 = 913.1054975
Or about £9.
So to add. Let's say the 7770 uses 40w less at full load than a 6850 it would take you over three years to justify the extra price. By that time the 7770 would be woefully and completely out of date.
I really, truly hate this whole "green" argument. If you're so hard up that you need to be careful about spending nine pounds a year then you should be turning coal into diamonds with your back door.

It's even less than that adopting your figures.
40W x 3hrs / 1000 = 0.12kWh
0.12kWh @ 12p = 1.44p/day
1.44p * 365.242199 days = ~£5.26/year.
So 5-6 years to get the extra cost back of buying a HD 7770 over a HD 6850.

I either strongly agree with Tom or, I strongly disagree. I strongly agreed when he ripped some Kingston water cooled memory to bits (before Kingston made him pull the review) and I have agreed with many other things he says. But.
I totally, unequivocally disagree with him on his 7770 review.
See, the problem with reviewers is that they're not reviewers.
They are salesmen being paid to sell things.
I can't tell you how many products (games especially) I have bought only to find they were nowhere near as good as I had heard (coolers mostly).
So to that ends Tom is way, way clear of the mark when it comes to the 7770.
They cost £130. The 5770 cost £130 bloody ages ago, yet nothing much has changed on a performance level.
