My girlfriend is currently trying to avoid carbs to aid in her weight loss, is this actually worthwhile or just causing further problems?

Meh, it's debated. Generally speaking, lowering carbs means you eat proportionately more protein and fat. Protein is more satiating than carbs, so you'll fill up faster and not eat as much. Even fats have some longer-term appetite suppressing potential when paired with protein. The weightloss she'll experience won't be anything to magically do with insulin (which is what many low-carbers think), it will be because you're eating fewer calories in general. The carbs cut out from the diet aren't replaced.

However, she will feel like ****. At least for a couple of weeks. Some call this the 'low-carb flu'. Some get past it and they claim to feel fine running on primarily fat as fuel. Your brain can't use fats as a fuel, only glucose and ketones, it takes time for your body to adjust to running on fats and ketones as fuel.

If she exercises, she will generally feel like crap. If she's having only protein/carbs for dinner before bed, she may not sleep as well at night. Carbs before bed may help sleeping quality.

I am personally against no carbs - lowering carbs is fine but dropping them all together is just wrong!

This.

Though as mentioned, a balanced diet, eating the RIGHT carbs, and correct amounts is far more beneficial. Exercise doesn't hurt. Furthermore, it's not a sustainable way of living. Carbs exists in milk, dairy, fruits, vegetables etc... You cannot 0 carb, and nor should you need to. Remember insulin is not always a bad thing if used in the right way - sure it's a fat storer, but it's also a nurtient shuttler - eating the right things, and done in the right way you can lose just as much fat even with carbs in your diet, owing to gaining some LBM.

Is there a good diet plan on here somewhere I've missed? I've personally done the low/no carb thing and experimented over the years. As mentioned, cutting them down isn't a bad idea, cutting them out is borderline lunacy!

Avoid the rubbish/simple carbs. Also avoid hidden sugars, they are literally in everything. Even so called health cereals, bars, all sorts.

What would her diet be like, can you give us an example. No doubt the food she believe have no 'carbs', will actually have some. Its like the whole 'fat is bad for you' thing all over again, but this time its carbs.

No carb diets are just not needed, unhealthy and hyped up by the clueless media.

Eating carbs can actually aid in weight loss, providing you eat the correct carbs and a sensible amount. Same with fat, people assume, to lose fat, you need to eat less fat. But when I put diets together for people with a higher level of fat in than they are used too, there always amazed at the results.

Eat low GI carbs and you're good, I'd say avoid bread, even whole grain if you must cut anything out but the type of carbs you should be eating are whole grain rice, sweet potato, oats, veggies, lentils

Dr Dukan diet is protein diet.
Only carbs younger are from oatbran.
Works quite well. First stage is a pain.
No sugar, week with vegetables and week without.
We eat beef and chicken.
You can get used to it.

But I'm on it as I have slow metabolism... otherwise just cutting down carbs and sugar would do.

Oops I see you gave examples at the end, ignore.

Is designing diets part of your profession? I could do with some advice if so...

Not at all mate, I just like helping out. PT'ing and offering nutrition advice is something that gives me great satisfaction. I'm by no means qualified (yet), but in this industry, qualifications are nothing but a piece of paper as you learn more through personal experience and the experience of others, rather than following a generic course

You don't need to go on a carb diet to lose weight. Just switch the carbs you eat to brown wholemeal/wheat. ie Rice, Pasta, Cereal etc.

Cut out the crap foods, don't over eat and do more exercise. Basically a lifestyle change to be more healthy.

Well, you'll have to eat fewer carbs, and calories in general, to lose weight. Simply switching the type of carb, without altering overall calories, will not lead to weight loss, unless the new carbs don't taste as nice and therefore you don't eat as much overall.

Well if you need a case study for your portfolio let me know!!

for me personally I lost weight very fast on a low carb diet...

really its a way to loose weight short term...

I lost 6stone ish on low carb eating as much as I wanted in under a year.....

its so easy (well for me) I could not believe I was eating what seemed (almost) normally and loosing so much weight people who had not seen me for a few weeks would notice...

I avoided too much red meat and pretty much had a diet of chicken, fish green salad, veg (non root) nuts as a snack and lots of fizzy water...

low carb is supposed to kick your body into a different mode, it makes your breath smell and for me it gave me a massive energy boost...

though its also possibly if you only eat meat / low carb stuff you jsut end up eating less without knowing it...

I lost 6 stone ish in under a year with no real effort or will power...
