Could you give up your democracy for a lifetime of luxuries

Let's say you lived in a country governed by dictatorship. You cannot leave said country, and you cannot vote. Revolts against government will lead to harsh penalties.

However your every need is catered for. When you need money it's there. When you need work it's there. When you need healthcare it's there. When you need food, water, a nice home, it's there. Anything you possibly want and need is provided.

Could you give up your democracy for the above?

No.

I was in North Korea for the 1st-5th of this month staying in a a very nice hotel, eating in restaurants for every meal etc. and couldn't wait to leave even after that short period.

Not being able to do something as simple as complain openly about things such as politicians is surprisingly depressing.

I don't really feel like I'm living in a (utopian) democracy anyway.

So, yeah.

Depends if all people are catered for. If it means there are people who are effectively slaves so that a only certain part of the population can get everything catered for, then no.

What were you doing over there? You should make a thread about it, not many people will ever get the chance to go there.

I think I could, there's not really a great sense of democracy and having my vote 'count' in this country anyway, especially with the current Government making up policies to suit both parties and ignoring things that they pledges during the election.

Thirded (if thats even a word!), I'm always intrigued by North Korea.

edit: Too slow, fourthed! :D

Tourist? Wow, I didn't know they allowed that sort of thing. Isn't the border tightly controlled?
Only the south. You can get in from China by paying the appropriate people bribes. I believe the adjoining area is an autonomous region, so central government turns a blind eye to the whole thing.

Yeah....the only reason to have democracy is to ensure access to all those things anyway. If they are guaranteed by a utopian benevolent dictatorship it wouldn't bother me as long as it was universal.

No Bribes needed and I travelled all over the North Korea not just near the border. I'll create a thread as I'm hijacking this one.
