Hey guys, i have had my Kingston Hyper x 16gb DDR3 ram for a few days, set to run with xmp at 1600Mhz, with the voltage at 1.5v.
I have been experienceing a freezing issue, where it completely locks up randomly. I dont get a blue screen, just unresponsiveness, unable to use any keys and the display is alos frozen.
This forces me to restart the pc.

I have been changing the voltage bit by bit, but still get the same issue.

Whack it up to 1.55/1.56v, if that doesn't work, hit up 1.65.

There are a lot of steps to try between 1.55/1.56V and 1.65V.

The OP should try those first.

But before getting carried away with the voltage they should check that they have the correct timings set.

They seem to be 9-9-9-27 for all the 1600MHz Kingston HyperX.

And that the command rate is set to 2T.

Hopefully the XMP profile will have sorted those but they should check with CPU-Z (Memory tab).

I have just checked, the timings are correct, and the command rate it 2t.
Double checked with cpu-z.
I have tried pretty much all voltages in between 1.5 and 1.65, i am currently at 1.56v and will see how it goes.

As you've got up to 1.65V, and still have a problem, I'd suggest testing the sticks.

Try one stick at a time and see if you get problems with any particular stick(s).

Also try a known working stick in each RAM slot on the motherboard and see if it's any particular slot(s) which cause a problem.

Also what CPU cooler are you using?

Edit:

Just noticed from the other thread it's the Silver Arrow.

I've not seen it with that cooler before but you could try loosening the cooler ever so slightly and see if it helps.

Well i havent quite been at 1.65 or 1.6 yet.
Anywho, ive set it to 1.56 and seeing how it goes.
The cooler i have is the Silver Arrow by Thermaltake.
Temps idle at about 23-26c.

If i run into it again then i shall try swapping out the ram as you said.

I have come to believe Kingstone hyper X ram doesn't work to well on lower voltages and needs at least 1.6v - 1.65v to work properly @1600mhz, as this is apparently a little high for sandybridge I have come to the conclusion that the hyper X series of ram is not 100% compatible with SB.
I had 2x4gig sticks of HyperX grey and it just wasn't stable at anything below 1.6 volts.
Intel have stated that 1.6v is ok with SB and have even tested @ 1.65v and reported no issues although they still recommend no more than 1.6v

Thanks spankin, pc didnt freeze last night at 1.56v yet but its only a matter of time
I may even run memtest for a bit tomorrow.

I'm running 16gb of the kingston @ 1.55v without issue, hopefully you should be ok at 1.56v.

How have you come to believe that?

OcUK must have sold thousands of kits of Kingston HyperX for Sandy Bridge systems and it's always been recommended on this forum to try the RAM at ~1.5-1.55V.

There appears to have been very little trouble in running at less than 1.6V.

Even the OP in this thread appears to be now happily using 1.56V.

It will be fine i've spoken to kingston themselves and even ocuk tech support, so again

:)

Whatever advice you do listen to there's one thing everyone seems to agree on and that's lower is better.

Even if you're sceptical of the advice given by OcUK:

- Do not exceed 1.425v core voltage, doing so could limit lifespan of the CPU
- Aim to keep temperatures below 70c underload if at all possible
- Do not overclock with BCLK, again doing so could limit lifespan of the CPU
- Recommended memory voltage is 1.50v, so make sure to run your memory at 1.50v, higher than 1.60v could limit lifespan of the CPU
- These recommendations come from OcUK and Intel, your warranty is un-affected but we highly recommend you adhere to the above to make sure your CPU lifespan is un-affected
- All Sandybridge CPU's worldwide should be run at the above or lower voltages, no higher!

there's no reason not to follow it if you can.

- Recommended memory voltage is 1.50v, so make sure to run your memory at 1.50v

That's why people are recommending 1.56v then? lol, but anyway as i said and i'll say it again OCUK and KINGSTON both said it was perfectly ok at 1.625. It's only just above the max. Wont say anymore

@ Neil79

I don't know about "people" but I always recommend that anyone stays within the upper limit advised by OcUK and as close to 1.5V as as possible unless the RAM will actually run with less than that.

1.56V is fine and, considering OcUK's published advice, is safer than 1.625V.

So your comment:

That's why people are recommending 1.56v then? lol

makes me LOL.
