3 houses got broken into along my street this month, we have just recieved a knock on the door from local police warning us and handing out letters to all the doors, would you say this would be a good time to get something to keep by the bed just in case i get any nasty intruders during the night?

Nasty intruders who will likely be carrying something themselves. All that will likely happen is that you'll provoke them whilst half asleep and then get potentially multiple people attacking you.
Don't think it's really going to get you far...

Better to just setup Cameras/Automatic lights around your house imo. Put them off even coming and trying.

Too right. The way I see it, if someone breaks in to your house and you beat them, It wouldn't have happened if they hadn't broken in.

We had someone knock on the door at 4am last night. The wife had left the electric gate open by mistake but by the time I'd got out of bed there was no one there. Drunk people maybe?

+1 for German Shepard.

Can't keep dogs in my little flat as I'm renting. I will inform my landlord to see if he can install anything inside our house like small cameras or something.

Ignorance of the law is no defence. You'd most likely get done as 'beating' doesn't sound like an appropriate response to a perceived threat.

Unfortunately the law is to lax when it comes to this sort of thing, 'reasonable force', what a load of rubbish.

Forget the German Shepherd man get a GOOSE. No jokes, nobody will ever try and break into your house if you have a pet goose running around. Also they make more noise than a dog too.

..But in all seriousness just take up Golf and keep the clubs in your bedroom. Aint nothing that beats a good old 9iron.
