Are you a Trekkie and do you like sleeping to background noise?

What's that noise??

What noise!?

This is going to be one of those videos with something like a chainsaw or some mentalist screaming their head off half way through making you poo yourself in fright when you wake up.

I have to have something like the TV on, in order to fall asleep as quickly as I do. Listening to that wouldn't help me, I don't think.

Ooops electronic ambient noise of the engines moving along would be heard inside

/time to sit in the corner

Still no explanation of why that noise was present out side the ship.

"In space, nobody can hear you scream. But their on-board computer can synthesise the sound for their listening pleasure."

I think I remember the producers of TNG acknowledging that you cannot hear sounds in outer space (which means all the external shots of space battles should have been silent) but of course that wouldnt have made for good tv (no photon torpedo launch sounds..wot!) so they rolled with it.

The internal sounds are easy to explain (like this engine idle sound). You are INSIDE the ship feeling its vibrations and the air inside carries sound. Also I think the computer synthesizes some sounds to give feedback to the crew. Its definetly a feature I would include if I designed a ship like that.

In a funny way this kind of thing is already here - in fly by wire planes. For example on an Airbus the pilot is not actually "feeling" the control forces on the stick. The computer commands a gizmo to give "artificial feel" to the pilot so he/she can have some feedback. Just like the force-feedback on gaming sticks to give you an idea of what the machine is doing.

would sleep better to the ambient noise on the enterprise A you know that consistent beeping? with kirk and crew..

Although can open a can of worms with a whole kirk vs picard debates :p
