iPhone 4S - Is it now behind the times?

Not at all.

You could argue the screen size and the OS is old hat though.

This. It's still one of the best phones out ATM, but iOS and the small screen make it very different to all it's competitors (note different, not necessarily worse).

Are you getting the SGS2 mixed up with the Galaxy Note?

/Richard Hammond face on/ aaaaa.. I might have...

but still - Note illustrates well how the large screen thing can be WAAAAY overdone
That or he has the hand size of a young girl.

I have hands of a typical fat guitarist. Personally the bigger screen the better for me. But your argument, again - can be used the other way round. By the "girl" part alone, 48% of target customers have that hand size. Then add kids. Then add ethnic factor. Then add countries where people still text and operate phones while driving.

By young girl, I meant child.

I've yet to meet anyone (literally, anyone) who has had trouble using a phone the size of the SGS2. I've got pretty small hands myself, and I find it fine.

The Note would probably be too big for some people to use comfortably, but a phone the size of the SGS2 - Simply not an issue.

In that case, I will agree with you that the Note is an offensively large size for a phone.

For a mobile media device, it's fairly reasonable, and as there are quite a lot of people who don't actually make many phone calls, there is a market for the Note.

As Apple tend to stick to one device (just with memory size variants), they are always going to be cautious with things like the screen size. They won't want to run the risk of alienating a lot of buyers due to it being a bit too big.

I think that a 4" screen is the ideal size for the iPhone 5, and that's what I think it will be. I think 4.3" could work, but it might be pushing it a bit.

For me all smart phones fail due to battery life. I won't be getting one till the battery lasts 3 days without a charge like my Nokia.

How is it overdone if there's a market for it? Thankfully there are companies providing actual choice in size, to suit a variety of different users.

Other people look for different things in a phone than you do, who would have thought it?

The OS is getting on a bit, they are a victim of their own success. Android is popular because of its diversity and UI, even though every Android phone has a slightly different UI. Apple will change their UI with the iphone 5, if they dont, they will be left behind.

i didn't have difficulty with my s2 but its certainly nowhere near as comfy to hold and operate with one hand as the 4/4s .

god knows why phones are getting bigger and bigger. whats the actual reason for it ?

The Note was always going to be a niche phone last i heard it had sold over a million and that was about a month back.

Browsing and video would be the driving force i would say.

The yearly release cycle inevitably means that even if it is the best on release it will be overtaken.

Take the new HTC Tegra 3 and Krait phones for example.

However, it's not like it is that far behind, especially with Apple doing well to put in a powerful GPU which has taken half a year for Android phones to catch up to.

If you are talking about software, well that is so subjective I won't even bother to comment.

I don't agree. The very design of iOS is what makes it appealing to a mass market in many ways. Certain aspects of it do seem dated and could be improved, but I think Apple will continue to improve and evolve it over time.

Android isn't massively different to previous builds either.

I think you are massively exaggerating android there. It's popular as its the only choice other than apple. It's on cheap, medium and high end phones.
Most people really don't care about such things. As long as its a smart phone with apps and intel right price range. Then people buy. Android will have proper windows competition by the end of the year.

I for one have no doubt that Apple will rock the phone world and change everything by introducing something ground-breaking like widgets to iOS5
