ANOTHER shooting at a US school

Simply googling European school shootings listed at least 1 per year (up until 2009) in Germany alone... Some pretty high death tolls too. I hadn't heard of any of them, not that i go out of my way to learn about such things...

1 per year in germany alone? granted, i heard about this story through my ex who has a lot of family in ohio but if there's one shooting a year at a school in germany, why are we not hearing about them on the national news? we hear about the US ones ...

Probably because the US has "lax" gun laws and it's easier to criticise. People love to take the opportunity to easily criticise someone else / a nation.

BS. If i took a knife to school and was sat down in class i'm pretty sure i could attack 5-10 people with ease. Plenty more if you just went mental in the dinner hall.

Could you tho? I mean really? Think you could actually stomach getting that close to another human and stabbing them?

Psycologically it's way eaiser to shoot someone from a distance than it is to get up close and personal.

I still think it'd be far easier for people to stop someone with a knife/get away.
Depends on the situation really, if i was in a position to, I think I'd rather tackle someone from the side/behind who had a gun rather than someone who had a knife.

If i had the mindset to shoot people randomly pretty sure knifing people isn't much of a step up.

Pretty sure there is evidence that people are more likely to shoot someone than knife them if they are planning something like this. Knifing someone is a lot more visceral and personal and you are likely to get covered in their blood. Shooting someone is a little more removed from the outcome of your actions.

You can't really imagine that geeky loner at school taking a knife in and causing havok. Someone would disarm them whereas a gun scares the **** out of people and allows you to kill regardless of your physical attributes.

I was going to say this. A gun can give power to someone with none, whereas a knife still requires the physical prowess.

Yeah. If I was in a classroom and someone came in waving a knife around trying to stab people I think that he would soon have a few chairs wrapped round his head. We saw what happens recently when some dude runs into a pub with a chainsaw so a knife wouldn't be too much of an issue.

A gun also gives the attacker an easy way out. Its much easier to shoot yourself afterwards than it is to cut your own throat or stab yourself well enough to commit suicide.

Wow I'm surprised we've gone this far without the pro-gun bridage getting up in arms :p

Personally I think the availibility of guns does impact on the irrational choices made by the mentally unstable, but I think that as a seperate issue a rise in gang culture is also responsible for an increase in less spontaneous gun crime (e.g. in England).

As you say, it is a step up.

The eaiser route is a gun, plain and simple.

EDIT:
a rise in gang culture
AFAIK there hasn't actually been a rise in gang culture, it's just something that was put forward after the recent riots that was quickly discounted. The rise of poverty in the current climate? Now that's more likely.

This is just silly. Guns have been invented so to protect yourself you need a gun, pretty simple. Nukes have been invented so to protect yourself you also need a nuke which is the majority of governments ideology. We have nukes to protect ourselves against Russia and what not. Bad people will always get the weapon so to sit around without a suitable defence if idiotic. If we all had guns we could just shoot the mad gunman.
