OK so after much disappointment with a3 3.2's, golf v6's and bmw 330 ci's im going to take a look at a 46 k mile x reg mk1 s3... Seems sensibly priced at 5.5k and looks good in black with black leather.

Mileage seems somewhat suspicious, mot's will back this up.

Anything to look out for other than the haldex on these?!
 
They do about 32 mpg, servicing is not massively expensive. The seat is a bit chavvy and is going to being similarly 'expensive' to run being the same engine etc.
 
Given the cars you say you've been disappointed with I don't know why you're looking at the s3? Slower than either of the others quite soggy handling as standard though still with a nice interior.

Look for coilpacks, cambelts, waterpumps, problems with the self levellers for hids(usually just a replacement bar) abs problems. You'll be looking to change the suspension and remap it if its not already done.

Decent enough car but wont be what you're expecting I expect

The cupra R is a better handling and quicker car.

I looked at scoobs and couldnt bring myself to drive around in one..

Yah, I was just thinking that its a 12 year old high performance engine with a 4WD system that has probably only done town miles, and lets face it most S3 owners will probably be younger ppl that will give it a good spanking day to day.

I sold my old 1999 Audit TTr 225 many years ago and I know it has thrown up some rather large bills to the new owner over the last few years.
 
They are a slower car than the 3.2 as standard, 100% - bit more power lower down the rev range but wind the a3 up and it'll just about show the s3 its heels, a remap transforms the s3 though.
 
5 1/2k seems strong money for 99 s3 it better be mint for they kind of cash
Strong engines nigh on identical to later amk 210 lumps and 225 bam engines bv you have experience buying vags so I'll spare you the usual watch the haldex speel etc etc there's not much to watch out for on these bar the generic checklist for all cars but 5.5k for a 13yr old Audi ?

Alternatives.... Focus st megane 225 scooby etc etc etc
