Apparently meetings were held during CES to demo a hand-built version of the device to potential partners. We're told that the basic specs of the Steam Box include a Core i7 CPU, 8GB of RAM, and an NVIDIA GPU. The devices will be able to run any standard PC titles, and will also allow for rival gaming services (like EA's Origin) to be loaded up

Interesting idea, but I'm not totally sure on the reliability of the link.

If it does happen with the spec mentioned, I can imagine it being probably the most expensive console out there which such high end hardware. However, it would mean developers could have a standardised system to develop for, which is probably one of the biggest advantages consoles have over PC at the moment.

Anyway, should be interesting to see if anything gets mentioned in GDC or E3. I know they have a private booth on the latter, and with DOTA2 and CS:GO both being very public so far, I can't imagine it being for them.

Imagine HL3 as a launch title :D (as long as it still came out for PC of course).

We had this thread a while ago now.

Does sound like a good idea for people who don't have a high end pc to run some of the games

Oh do we? My bad =/ That shows me for only glancing at the front page!

So it's basically just a PC...

Don't really see the point, but whatever...

It's more like a console but for steam,I think it's going to be quite good for people who don't have a pc and with this steam console you can play games in your living room tv.

It is basically a SFF PC though. But with its own little OS (presumably). It's gonna cost a pretty penny with that hardware inside though.

I think it will compete with the likes of Microsoft and Sony to be honest.

Although I don't think it will sell as many as others I think it will be a hit for oc gamers.

i dont see the point in the xbox which is basicly a pc that only lets you do what microsoft want.

its ridiculous why bother putting a pc in a box and then locking it down?

So it's just another Alienware X51, but with more expensive components?

I'm not sure why anyone would buy one over a normal PC, especially if they lock it down to Steam and other gaming services. I just don't see it happening, the only actual thing from Valve I've seen pointing towards it is Newell going "well, if we had to, we'd consider it".

Except they won't. Because it'll be running PC titles anyway.

Think they should just stick to what they are good at.
Despite their mediocre user support, their digital service is a success

This system in a box is a product they would really need to provide support for

It if sells, it will allow developers to put some resources optimising for that hardware, just like they optimising for the hardware of consoles. Whilst it is a PC, specific components should make it easier.

If they're making a PC game, they can't optimise it for one particular specification, they need to support as many as possible.

No sane PC developer is going to take time out of optimising for PC as a platform, to make one specific PC setup run better. Especially if it only holds a tiny fraction of that market.

Console games are optimised because they're being made for a specific console, yes, they often start from the ground up with this in mind. This thing is intended to "run any standard PC titles", you really think PC developers are going to focus developing PC games for this Steam box and then see if it works on everything else at the end? That's just retarded.

Slight problem, Direct X. Unless it's snowing in hell I don't see Microsoft licensing DX to run on anything other than Windows. Unless this box runs Windows, in which case it isn't a console
