he government's plans for gay marriage have been criticised by the most senior Roman Catholic cleric in Britain.

Cardinal Keith O'Brien, the leader of the Catholic Church in Scotland, said the plans were a "grotesque subversion of a universally accepted human right".

He said the idea of redefining marriage, which David Cameron has said he supports, would "shame the United Kingdom in the eyes of the world".

He said it was wrong to deliberately deprive a child of a mother or father.

There are so many things wrong with what he has said I am not sure where to start, the outdated notion that only a man and a woman can be parents. Also the comment about an "accepted human right" what is he saying, homosexuals and lesbians forgo their human rights?

And lets be honest, the actions of some Priests and others who have tried to cover up their actions have brought not just shame but real pain and suffering to many.

If you read the full article it just gets worse.

Yes chum, thx for that.

I am still unsure why civil partnerships are insufficient, given the only difference in that and marriage is changing the definition within the dictionary. So it doesn't contain a reference to man and woman.

What legal difference is there now?

The thing that hit me most about his statement was using a relatively modern concept like 'human rights' to illustrate an assertion that is at its base archaic and draconian.

I honestly don't comprehend how allowing gay marriage will "deprive a child of a mother or father."

Surely gay couples help provide children with parents as they're more likely to adopt.

In a way it's freedom of speech in another it's just another element of religion and the church show how little it bares relevance to modern society. No real surprises here. Saddening indeed.

If Cardinal Keith O'Brien is genuinely so concerned about deliberately depriving a child of a mother or father, I think that a more sensible target might be single mothers.

As it happens, I think the whole thing is a thinly veiled and foolish attack on homosexuality.

As to changing the definition of things, I suspect that The Gay Hussar would go along with him ;)

See things like this are what annoyed me when the pope came to visit..."you as a society need to be less secular" he said. No we bloody well dont and how dare you judge us. especially when you have idiots like this spouting **** about human rights when his argument actually contradicts the whole idea and virtue of human rights.

To turn the argument of the cardinals around, i personally dont see how you can "morally" have a person like him in a position of power when he as a person seems to have so little regard to the rights and wellbeing of others and is blinded by his hatred and faith, especially to allow him in a position in which public and goverment have to take notice and exemplifies why we as a society need to become as secular as possible.

Hypocrits, boils my **** it does.

The Catholic Church don't really do themselves any favours sometimes.

Equal rights under law include the right to get married....I, for one think that marriage should be legal for gay couples, straight couples or group systems such as Polygyny, Group Marriage or Polyandry. Who are we to decide what works for each of us.

I also think that Civil Partnerships should not be limited to Homosexual couples, they should be available to all.

If gays want to be gay, so be it.. But don't allow them to become parents. I couldn't care about religion but he does have a point.

This really. If people want to be gay then that is one thing, but they cannot be parents. They are not supposed to be parents. If the child is male he will get repeatedly beaten up at school.

Why can't same sex couples be parents?

You can't get pregnant by sticking mr winkie up a man's bottom :p. (Honestly - Tefal told me!).

small minded hatef illed believer in an unproven book of fairytales Are we getting to the point where these kind of views should not be tolerated in our society.

I only hope that there will come a day when religion dies a slow and horrible death and we get rid of these idiots with their view buried 100 years in the past
