*****Official Star Wars: The Old Republic Thread*****

not...not sure if serious. if you want a game where you aren't "anybody", just a regular guy mixed in with regular guys, play sims? this is a big RPG. do you think the star wars films would have been as interesting if luke skywalker was an accountant and it was 2 hours of him playing with a calculator? the game would suck if you weren't 'anyone'. you'd never progress past the starter planet, you'd just be....gah....

You don't understand. That's ok, I can tell you never played SWG or any other MMO where you aren't a superhero straight from the off.

In my opinion it should be the world, and the community that you make inside the MMO that makes it special, not the storyline laid out infront of you. That's just a single player game with mates.

Yeah I played WoW which was like that, but it didn't seem to matter in WoW whereas in SWTOR it's really noticeable and annoying.

Thats the problem of a story driven mmo..

Story driven yes, but that's only half way to explaining the problem. If it was a story driven MMO then the story would be the "main driving force" behind the game. But it's not the "main driving force" it is "THE driving force". There's something quite strange about that if you ask me. Just doesn't fit MMOs at all. I don't need to be told I'm special, I know I'm special because I'm me.

I think it's the fact that TOR kind of throws it in your face - you release the deadly minion of an ancient sith from his tomb, defeat him in epic combat to make him your servant, and then spend the rest of the game trying to ignore the fact that everyone seems to have a carbon copy of him.

but that was the whole idea going into it. it is supposed to be following up KOTOR1+2, you couldn't do that without being focused on the story. if this game wasn't based on the fact that i am progressing to the point where i save the world, and actually played out that i was just some random guy, i wouldn't have bought it because then it wouldn't have been anything "new". 90% of my time on this game is spent running quests and stories, saving the world etc. the other 10% i do a dungeon or warzone. a lot of people bought this game to continue KOTOR and if they were just another cog they would have been VERY disappointed.

Some people in this thread think you can't have story without being "special" or having it revolve around you?

Talk about complete and utter lack and void of imagination!

Really? The latest stick to beat ToR with is that they've followed every decent MMO and made *you*the hero, Jesus give me a break.

The whole point for 99.99% of RPG's (and by extension MMORPG's) is that you are the hero of the story, it's your charactors story arc played out with 1000's of others, so an element of suspension is needed. The SWG model of "be a Bantha Farmer 013" was cancelled for a reason, it was ****, and SoE are renowned for giving complete crap continual lifelines.

If you have a problem with ToR and it's central story driven arc, than you must have a problem with people outside your guild / group killing the the same named mob as yourself, or being able to farm a boss over and over again for gear, or big bad generic raid boss dropping a token so you can buy your shoulder pads of glory off a guy with very large pockets crammed full of treasure. In essence you must have a problem with the genre as a whole?

The problem is that KOTOR3 doesn't work in MMO format. Paragus Station can never get blown up, Taris can never be nuked from orbit, and none of your companions can ever die.

Instead, whenever a bit of the storyline has to happen, you go into the room behind a green forcefield and try to pretend that it's actually making a difference to the world outside, all the while trying to ignore the other versions of 'you' going in and out of the same room.

I actually bought the game as a continuation of the kotor story, but it just doesn't work on that basis. Instead what you have is a kind of a collection of short stories from the kotor universe, which are mildly entertaining in a limited way, but not a patch on the first two kotors.

A problem with what the genre has become. That's the problem, it used to be a whole lot more interesting, but experimentation and innovation have given way to strictly controlled 'worlds' where nothing you do can affect it in the slightest way, because that would be more expensive, and it's cheaper to churn out the same old tosh with a new skin every year.

People will lap it up as long as you drip feed them rewards that they haven't actually earned.

Edit - anyway, this is a topic for a "Are mmos **** these days?" thread, I'll stop derailing here :D

I would have to disagree with you on that , imo SWG was far far from being ****. I would also extend that to other sandbox mmos , all of which tend to use the same story free format, and in the case of the greatest mmo ever (imo) ultima online, didn't even have any quests. I would 100% disagree that those mmos were ****.

SWG was as great as the effort you put into it. If you loaded it up, expected everything handed to you and then logged off in disgust when it wasn't (no doubt spamming up forums complaining about how crap it was) then I'm not surprised people thought it was pony.

Spend time making the most obscene genetic mutations (durni with the strength of a rancor and poison spit! :D) or making the best weapons/armour/buffs, not to mention the work it took to plan and create a fully functioning city, and then go raid one of the opposite faction and it's easy to see why so many people have such fond memories of the game.

And I never even went into taming or space.

I wonder how many guild leaders from the EU went to SWTOR summit? Anybody know of any?

Looking forward to watching this? Nice agenda too, covering a lot today!
