Ford Fiesta ST unveiled

I don't want to get wrapped up in BHP but 180 seems abit low considering the Ibiza Cupra had 180BHP back in 09, with most rivals putting out 200BHP+

Yes, but at nearly 1300kg, the Ibiza is obese in comparison.

If the weight is anything close to the quoted 970kg of the current Zetec S model, then this car will absolutely rock, I'm sure of it.

BHP is for people with small willies to talk over in the pub. I can think of loads of cars I'd have more fun in that are well under 150bhp than someone of the much higher powered cars I've owned and driven :p

If the new ST had the same front end as a Zetec S then I'd love it. But that grille is vile..and I've been waiting for the new Fester ST for a while now :(

There will be plenty of people changing over the bumpers for the ZS version I reckon, if I was in the market for the new ST I know I'd definitely be considering it.

£27K on a Focus is sheer lunacy. You go 1-2 years older and watch them dip well under £20K.

That was my point really, by the time this new fiesta is released, the £27k car that Janesy is talking about will likely be £20k or less.

As for running cost differences, I'm sure anyone who can afford a £17k-£20k+ car can afford the running costs of a focus rs.

Regardless of the ecoboost tag on this car, I doubt real world economy would be anything better than 32mpg if driven frugally. The difference between manufacturer quoted economy figures and real world seems a lot more off the mark on this recent trend of small engined forced induction hatches than it used to be for larger engined NA hatches from a few years ago.

A 2009 will be in that region so that's a 3 year old car at the end of it's factory warranty. Most people don't apply logic when buying a new car, they don't care about the total repayment figure or the fact that you can buy X or Y second hand. People want a shiny new car and the MPG, tax and insurance savings are enough to justify it to most new car buyers. That's why the Clio sells well alongside the faster Meganes and the Corsa VXR sells well alongside the Astra VXR.

As above, most people will be financing and probably couldn't. The Focus RS is considerably more thirsty than a Fiesta ST no matter what MPG figures you pull out of thin air. You can get a 1.6T Ecoboost Focus Zetec-S with 180 BHP and a claimed MPG figure of 47 so even if I'm mean (the current generation Fiesta is 25% lighter than the current generation Focus!) and knock 10 off that for a real world figure you're still getting considerably more than you'd ever get out of a Focus RS. The base price of a 1.6T 180ps Ecoboost Focus is £20k so the Fiesta doesn't seem all that bad value in comparison. It's unfair to call a Fiesta ST rubbish because you can buy a 3 year old Focus RS for a bit more, most people don't think like that!

Going on the Co2 emissions of the Focus Zetec-S with the same engine, road tax is £115 as opposed to £260 on the Focus RS. All these little things push 90% of car buyers to taking out finance on a new car as opposed to looking at whatever they can buy second hand.

Anyway why spend 20k on a Focus RS when you can go out and get an M3 for that money, it's only a bit more to run ;)

That looks great! Bit expensive though, but still.

I don't see why 40mpg isn't achievable if you're not hooning either. It's a 1.6 in a small hatchback. A light one, at that.

I like it :)

isn't there a new focus RS due soon too that will roughly [give or take 6 months] coincide with the release of this fiesta? I would imagine that this launch would reduce the price of the MKII RS further, who knows.

In the grand scheme of things, I would suggest that the RS would hold its value a lot better than a focus ST equivalent and loads more than a fiesta ST .

I know what you are saying about finance, I was comparing like for like with other fast fords. fact is that if we are comparing class to class, this will be up against the next RSClio, Corsa VXR et al. I am concerned that the pricing of these will be a little lower making the Fiesta ST a poor prospect to a buyer regardless of finance or purchase outright.

I didn't say it was rubbish, my first post in this thread was singing its praises! I was merely pointing out that with a 20K budget for a fast ford, an RS would be more attractive to me personally.

Its good to have you back btw Janesy :)

You're probably looking at 2014/2015 before you see another Focus RS according to the rumours floating about on the internet.

The previous generation Fiesta ST was 30 or so BHP down on it's contemporaries but still managed to sell well so I don't think it'll cause too many problems, especially of Moutune offer the same dealer backed upgrade options. Sadly most people don't think of what they can buy second hand and a 3 year old Focus RS might not seem much of an attractive proposition to someone after a new Fiesta ST.

Thanks! :p

the main problem will be every time you park it bits will get nicked of it, and you risk losing the interior every time you leave it overnight somewhere

I think I prefer the mito cloverleaf as a small hottish hatch ( I couldnt bring myself to say warm..oh damn) at least the chavs wont be queing up to steal your bumpers

Fiesta In The Park last year, no one on the Ford Fiesta ST forum had centre caps on their allows for that exact reason, they said that the ZSOC guys steal them lol
