I'm not starting an anti smoking thread or one to judge, but I am quite interested as why smokers actually smoke.

I admit I have tried one myself, it tasted awful, made me cough and my clothes smelt like hell until they went through the wash. This is my own personal opinion, and I respect that of a smoker.

I can some up with many reasons why you shouldn't, but none why you should. Since they are very expensive, there must be a reason.

Please educate me as I'd like to understand it from your side

oh, and before anyone says addiction....you aren't addicted until you smoke a few

Thanks

People seem to be focusing on the image. The times I have smoked it has either been because it relaxes me or because the smoking area of clubs is a fantastic place to start talking to girls.

Because they think it makes them look cool. Then they spend most of their adult life either complaining about how much they want to give up but never do, or trying to defend how much they like it on internet forums.

People I know who do/did, started when they were kids where they either genuinely gave in to pier pressure as it was cool, or had parents and relatives that smoked, and it just went from there.

Once person I felt really sorry for was a mate at school and his parents smoked and drank (alcoholics) all the time and he got addicted by passive smoking so when he could start he did. He went to my uni as well so I saw the train wreck that came out the other end.

Does it relax you because you are already addicted, and needed the hit?

There must have been a time when you weren't a smoker, so how would you have known it would have relaxed you?

There was a reason the famous Abbey Road picture of The Beatles had the Cigarette airbrushed out of it......

Regarding the argument that it "relaxes" you, I find whiskey and rubbing one out is much more effective.

One of my ex's smoked, kissing her was like licking an ashtray

I also wonder why people smoke. It has always disgusted me since I was a kid. It's weird that even in 2012 people are still doing it when the health risks are so well known. When I walk to work in the morning I sometimes see a nice looking woman and then she starts smoking and I think "Why would you mess with your nice looks like that? And get stinky.". And I am able to walk to work without needing any kind of drugs, so is life so bad for these people that they need to inhale a drug on the way to work in the morning in order for life to be bearable?

I admit to being out of touch these days, but why would you do it to act hard? surely working out with weights, going to boxing lessons would do that in a much better way
I think the answer to this lies in which of course of action is easiest :)
