BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

Should there be packet loss? Didn't think there should be any at all. (apart from the interleaving switch).

On a perfect line then you wouldn't want to see any packet loss but in the real world, on a less than perfect line, tiny amounts of packet loss aren't anything to worry about.

Please could someone confirm how BT install the line - is it a box outside the house which has a cable run from their box somewhere. From that box to inside of your house is covered by the master phone socket wiring, then from there to the infinity modem and home hub ??

A faceplate with filter is put on to your master socket as per normal ADSL. Your phone and BT modem connect to this as per ADSL.

The Openreach engineer will relocate your master socket if you ask him nicely and if necessary, bribe him with tea and biscuits.

If they say the area should be active by the end of march can this be expected or will there likely be delays?

How well have FTTP installs gone for most towns?

The telegraph poles in my area were prepared for fibre early last year. My town was supposed to go live with FTTP at the beginning of Sept. In Dec they started rolling it out around some streets inc my parents one road away from mine and some roads at the other side of my town. My street though and most of the ones within half a mile of mine (the other side from my parents street) are still waiting. When phoning BT to ask I was told that there is a problem getting the cabinets connected and the woman said it would well be that they need permission (possibly from another service like a water company or gas) to dig part of the town up to connect these cabinets and nodes.

As for the time frame the people i know that they connected were all done pretty quickly. It isnt that time consuming.

Anyone else having problems with BT infinity tonight? I'm getting a 400ms ping and 0.06mbit downstream speed.

Doesn't seem to work very well. On one hand it tells me me I can't get fibre (which I can and do) and then contradicts itself by giving me an estimate lol

The problem with most of these "guesstimators" is they're all working off sometimes out of date databases and should be taken with a massive pinch of salt.

Phone number checked: xxxxxxxxxxxxx
Postcode checked: xxxxxxxxxxxx

Data found:

Exchange:

No fibre services were found for this postcode.

Your speed estimate for fibre is:
Downstream: 40Mbps
Upstream: 10Mbps

Edit - I'd also be slightly cautious of entering your landline number into any vague website. "Good morning sir.. Please we be selling you some glazing double now please..."

It got mine spot on :D

In what sense?

All it did was use readily available information to "estimate" your line length to the exchange, which is of little use when it comes to FTTC, and then use your postcode to "estimate" which cabinet you're connected to.

Like I said before it's all estimates and guess work. Not that it's a complete waste of time but if you're advocating a website you really should advise people exactly how accurate they are.

Alternatively I'd just point people in the direction of the BT Wholesale checker.

it got my line distance correct and line attenuation I used to get on adsl.

ill delete it anyway gg.

thought i'd do a BB quality monitor.

Few big downloads in there and general use. 2 laptops, 2 pc, 3 phones.
