KONY 2012 - Campaign to arrest Joseph Kony

The higher production values in video the more support the charity gets seems to be the formula.
Charities don't count for **** if you want to help out then you have to do it yourself

Awareness means nothing?

Fair point.

I just don't feel that it's fair people are being mocked for joining a cause they feel is worthy of trying to stop.

I agree, after all their intentions are well placed (minus those doing it to look caring and cool which is what I guess a lot of people in this thread are making fun of). Just would be nice if their efforts were better channelled.

Gotta agree with the majority in this thread. This stuff has been happening all over Africa for decades, suddenly everyone seems to care. Next week it will all be forgotten on the Facebook front.

Go watch Blood Diamond. Yes it's Hollywood, but it's fairly close to the truth.

Awareness means nothing?

In a case like this, it could easily be argued that awareness does mean nothing. The vast majority of the people who see the video, will just watch it, maybe post it on on facebook and be done with it. Even if a few million do that, it won't help the cause at all. It's not they're going to run into the guy in the street and stop him now they've seen the video.

There may be some who donate, not many, and a lot of those would probably have done so anyway/already have.

So no, I can't say that the sort of awareness this video is generating will do much to help. If anything it could even be bad, as people can share the video, feel that they've done their contribution to the cause, and be done with it.

Cant help but think that the author of the video just wants a pulitzer or noble peace prize or something for his work. I agree with the message behind it and that Kony should be removed, with extreme prejudice, yet the video itself is amazingly pretentious in its approach to enlighten viewers awareness. The first half of the video is basically "look what I've done" with the latter half being the only relevant part.

I don't really care about arguing the rights and wrongs of the video.

It had 7 million views when I watched it last night. It now has c. 35 million.

That is pretty damn impressive.

That doesn't really matter, they're spreading the word.

Invisible Children have responded to the criticisms:

And Bernie Madoff responded to his. Doesn't mean jack ****.

If people are only just tuning into this 26 years after the event because of a YouTube video, one has to question the level of commitment to the cause. I'm all for humanity etc, but a quarter of a century later? Either you didn't give a hoot before it was fashionable or you just couldn't be bothered to understand the atrocities that have been happening in the world for decades.

The difference is, everybody else is honest enough to admit they don't really care because it doesn't affect them.

Ignore him and africa. You remove a despot killer only for the next one to be installed. Too much hate involved in the conflicts so the only way for a lasting peace is for one to wipe the other out. Harsh but true.

Seems like this video has got more support from people in Britain than for our own troops fighting in Afghan. Why is it everyone on my facebook thinks its cool sharing this ********, he's got away with it for 20 odd years now, a few likes, shares and views is gonna do **** all.

For most people it's neither of those things. People simply didn't know about the specific situation.

Personally I don't see what anyone would have to gain on a personal level if their only input was to share the video. It doesn't even matter if they care or not, they're spreading the message. If 10% then do something, even just sign the petition, it's millions of people contributing to the overall objective which is to show that people care enough to keep the US troops in Uganda to help arrest Kony. In the process many millions of people now know about the situation which may lead to more good things.

while this *** needs a bullet to the face, the "Charity" behind the campaign has a 2 out of 4 star rating!! Please explain this!

Charity Navigator gives Invisible Children 3 out of 4 stars. It's gives our Programs its highest rating of 4 stars. Our Accountability and Transparency score is currently at 2 stars due to the fact that Invisible Children does not have 5 independent voting members on our board of directors--we currently have 4. We are in the process of interviewing potential board members, and we will add an additional independent member this year in order to regain our 4-star rating by 2013. We have been independently audited by Considine and Considine since Fiscal Year 2006, and all of our audits have resulted in unqualified opinions on the audit reports. An unqualified opinion means that the auditors believe the financial statements are free of material misstatement and are in conformity with generally accepted accounting principles of the United States.
