From N8 to N9

i have been offered to replace my trusty and beloved N8 with a brand new cyan N9.

I need some help, N9 is capable of doing only a fraction of what N8 does, such USB on the go, HDMI, and the lack of apps (worse than symbian afaik).

But then again there are only a few devices that have the plethora of stuff the N8 has.

PS. i like the looks of the N9
 
how much is this going to cost you? (don't say free upgrade, nobody gets free upgrades, it's included in the price of the contract, for instance my phone bill is only £10 per month)

what do you use your phone for?

on an average day how many hours/mins do you spend on these activities:

texting
calling
email
apps

how often do you use the below?

pictures/camera
sat nav


you may be better off switching to sim only and keeping the N8
 
it is going to cost 30 euro...phone's main use making calls and emailing (about 1,5 hour of talking per day, 20 sms's and 5-6 emails).
BUT i do like to have the awesome 12MP camera when i want to take photos and i have been using the hdmi in presentations, watching movies etc. It is an all rounder the N8, has anything you need...Sat nav isnt for me something essential..

I have been using the N8 for 2 years now, so ias much as i like it i do need something new but i cant see any worthy replacements out there, be it android/ios or symbian.
 
Almost anything is better than the N8, it's nasty to use (despite being good at a couple of things).

Almost any Android or iOS (or Windows) phone is a huge replacement. Yes, the cameras haven't quite caught up yet but the difference is ultimately fairly small.

Everything aside from that is massively better. The apps are all better, the phones are way faster, things like the email clients blow the one on the N8 out of the water.

Don't hold onto it purely because of the camera, you can achieve pretty much similar shots with the iPhone 4S for example.

As for the N9, well, it's a lot better, but it's running a dead OS so you're better off looking elsewhere.

No, he was asking about that and asking whether other devices might be worth it:

After buying an N8 (which was largely a dead phone shortly after launch), it wouldn't be particularly great for him to buy an N9 and suffer the exact same fate, would it? No.

Also, I didn't "tell him to buy an iPhone 4", I used the iPhone 4S camera as an example of one that is comparable to the Nokia N8.
 
Samsung galaxy s2 can host usb devices and has hdmi out (via mhl dongle)

Good camera and still up there with the best.

Indeed, anything along these lines is a far better option than an N9. The N9 is lovely and has a fantastic design but it's just not a good phone for long term use.

The Lumia 800 is better and has the same design but you're going to have to take a hit on features.

thanks for the replies robbo, so youre suggesting that the upgrade path should be either android or iOS. Windows phone is out of the question by default :p

what i dislike about android is that phones built on it look cheap, have strange issues such as reception/call quality, problematic GPS and conerning apps i am not the type of user browsing market all day...5-6 which i need are already installed in N8 and they do the job well.
I cannot buy SGS2, out of my budget and too big for my taste.
Called my operator and told me i can get a Moto Atrix or a Desire S, android wise.
Atrix looks are aughhh:( ....desire S is a lot better but same specs with N9.

Yes, Android or iOS depending on what you prefer.

Why is Windows Phone out of the question? It isn't the Windows Mobile of old and it's actually very, very good now.

It's a shame if your options are limited, the Desire S is okay but it's nothing to get excited about. Same with the Atrix.

The SGS2 is generally a cheap device, it should be around the price of the N9 or perhaps even less?

I suppose if you are limited, you could try the N9 and see what you think to it. If you don't use many apps then you'll probably find it good. The entire thing is a lot nicer than the N8, despite the camera being worse.

not in this country unfortunately. What annoys me in winmo is that everything i transfer in to the phone has to go through zune and you cant tweak it whatsoever, i will get bored with it (but then again i could be bored with N9 too)

Yes, Windows Phone and the iPhone both are limited with tweaking. If you like tweaking then you would love Android. It's designed for that.

As for tweaking, there is some on the N9 but it's fairly restrictive in general as well. There are a few new Android phones due out soon from Sony and HTC as well (Xperia P, One S) that may be cheap and are smaller.
 
I love my N9, its definitely an awesome phone, its UI cannot be beaten imo, it has a bloody great battery life and it looks brilliant. However yes it is lacking in some apps (still has the usual suspects Spotify, Skype, Firefox etc of course.). Its been updated with firmware updates quite regularly, however be aware it will never have the support the other 3 main OS's will. It has a lot of tweakability, there is a great tweaking app called QT Tweak if you do end up buying it.:)

The N9 is dropping in price quite a lot of late so you could get a good bargain.

Personally Im looking forward to the SIII or Xperia S, however am slightly loathed to go with Android in general and its awful battery life.

Why? If it does everything he is going to need for the next however long, then why does it matter that the OS is no longer current?

ICS has been ported to the N9, but really i stand by statement above.
