BREAKING!! PETER MOLYNEUX LEAVES LIONHEAD

Why do people seem to be acting like MS just bought them? It's been 6 years, maybe he just wants to do something different?

I thought this also, Microsoft bought Lionhead ages ago?

From what I can tell, they're certainly a lot better to work for than the likes of EA or Activision, who basically buy up game franchises and completely ruin them for a quick buck.

If thats the case, then the question must be, what/who was stopping him doing 'something different' at MS? After all, as the MS poster boy, youd think he would quite a bit of leeway creatively...

ps3ud0

I've got so much time for Molyneux, I called Lionhead up when I was 16 and blagged my way through his office to speak to him about getting started in the games industry. He must've given me at least 20 minutes time on the phone and offered me work experience, except I couldn't get there (still think that might be the point where it all went wrong for me lol).

Top chap.

Probably hates the idea of kinect forced upon him, I always felt that despite what he said fable the journey wasn't his idea more Microsoft pushing it to be used on a established series to get rid of its gimmicky image, and from the look of it most future titles especially those on the next gen consoles will be kinect centred. I hope his new studio does well I loved the fable series, sure they weren't perfect and he promised a lot and they may not have quite lived up to his hype but he had a vision of what he wanted his games to be like and tried to get that out. I think we are to hard on games developers, the amount of time, effort and skill that goes into a game is rarely appreciated

People wondering why he stayed so long? Apparently he had a loyalty bonus he was waiting for.

Lionhead studios is over. People leaving left, right and centre. Microsoft have killed them. :(

Most likely they probably wanted him to continue with the Fable franchise, no doubt he is probably bored of it and wants to work on something new.

Perhaps he may have been offered the freedom to create something with a new team at Microsoft, but perhaps also he has an idea and wants to pursue it himself, possibly even just for financial gain.

I believe 22 Cans was already setup by a former colleague from Lionhead, so perhaps they've got an idea they want to work on.

I'd like to see an updated Populous - one of the best games ever written in my opinion.

I think it's wrong to be derogative of the man, but he's one of the rarities of being a well known games designer, of which there are few.

Like similar Designers though, their fame and accolade comes from the fact that they wrote games in the early days, largely all by themselves.

The Gaming Industry is a very different world now, one man alone can't make a major game anymore.

Also unlike say Directors, or Musicians, you can't be sure they will follow up again with something amazing. Their role will also have changed significantly, becoming a Producer overseeing an entire project, rather than coding the thing themselves.

Am I the only one that thinks Molyneux isn't all he's cracked up to be?

I think his mind is fantastic, and he's only ever let down when putting the concept in motion. So no, I disagree with you. Molyneux is definitely a visionary and a leader.

I just think the things he wants to do are always just out of grasp. I think if he went into an underground bunker, with a good team and gave no one any heads up, He didnt release any games, or sequels. If he didnt have to stick to deadlines. When he emerged in say 30 years time we'd have something epic without hype.

So Molyneux is great, Lionhead fall short of making his visions reality

Peter Molyneux had imagination. The problem was that his ideas often went beyond what the technology could implement - Black and White being a great example (having said that my karate kicking cow was awesome!).

What is sad is that an indistry that had room for small publishing houses publishing independent games seems to have changed into an industry that only has room for marketing and graphics at the expense of gameplay and storytelling.

Agree - in my opinion he's never been responsible for a truly great game (or even a really good one), so I think he's been way overhyped over the years.

Heck - we all have good ideas!
