New Citys Announced 2012

You learn something new every day!

Also, in before the first "It's spelt CITIES" comment :p

I thought a City had to have a cathedral to be classed as a city? Or was that just lies from the RC high school i went to? :p

Not since Birmingham in the late 1880s (They, however, changed the church to a cathedral designation in the early 1900s), a City is created by Royal Appointment and really means nothing.

It used to be a rule removed during the industrial revolution I believe due to the increased importance of places like Liverpool and Sheffield.

Edit: or maybe it was Birmingham's fault actually, TheMightyTen has just jogged my memory.

Even so... Boro has a cathedral, a local airport, a massive hospital, a large football team, a decent population covering a large area. Boro should have been classed as a City years ago.

Needs a river aswell? We have that too!
