Most original films?

Avatar?! Visually yes, but the story has been done a million times over! It's Romeo and Juliet, two people from different sides fall in love...

In fact, I thought after I'd watched it that it's actually very like Pocahontas - guy observing natives, falls in love with native girl, natives find out he was there to betray them and are mad, he ultimately turns against his own people to defend the natives.

The most original film I've ever seen was a French animated, pretty much silent, film called Belleville Rendez-Vous (Or Les Triplettes de Belleville in France). Brilliant, brilliant, BIZARRE movie!
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0286244/

It's about an orphan boy called Champion who grows up and becomes a Tour De France cyclist, then gets kidnapped by the mafia and sailed to Belleville, a massive city, to be part of a gambling ring. His grandma and her enormous dog Bruno sail in a tiny rowing boat to Belleville, where a 70-year-old set of triplets, who in the 40s used to be musical stars, help her to try and find Champion.

The animation is so odd. If you're into animation, watch it. :)

It is also a rip of an animated movie called FernGully: The Last Rainforest.

The only original thing Avatar brought to the table was CGI phosphorescence.

I don't class The Matrix as original, there have been countless movies before it that covered the same ground, it's just that The Matrix was the one that made it to cult status/the collective concious straight out of the gate while the others tanked at the office and only really made it big once they'd got to a retail release.

The problem is you could say the same about almost all of the films in this thread.

Alien - how many films have there been about colonists killed by aliens on another planet?
Toy Story - Two men meet, massive rivalry and hatred, go on an adventure and slowly find respect and friendship between each other.

Etc. Etc. Same with the argument against Avatar.

Hmmm, thinking about it, most of the films I had in mind cover things like the human-computer interface, the Frankenstein complex and all the associated frippery that goes with the rise of the robots or robots going wonky, but now you mention it, I can't think of one that covers what happens if they actually win.
Darn!

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.

American Psycho.

Taxi Driver.

Fight Club.

True Romance.

I thought howell's moving castle was pretty out there, I enjoyed that.

The original saw film was great too, especially thanks to that jaw droppingly epic twist

Id have to disagree with the Matrix, so heavily lent form Japanese anime, ghost in the shell, Armitage III etc, still has original elements and a fresh take on though and worthy none the less.

Alfred Hitchcock's Rear Window. How many other films have been shot essentially entirely from a blokes back bedroom, to such great effect.

Taxi (the French version); A great mix of comedy/action/humour
Desperado; comedic violence

Both were pretty unique when they came out

Mullholland Drive is another masterpiece, I've seen a few David Lynch things now (including Twin Peaks), I can't tell if he's a genius or just a perv :p
