How much debt do you have?

I have a genuine question with regards to student loan debt. Having "had words" with the Student Loan Company today, it appears as if I've been massively overcharged by them and they owe me a rather large amount of money (rather large in comparison to the loan I took out with them).

Seeing as, throught PAYE, Student Loan is deducted prior to tax (I believe), when I receive the refund from the Student Loan Company am I liable to be taxed on it?

Nope. My friend recently had the same issue. He claimed for reimbursement and several months later he got a cheque for it.Took a battle to get it though.

As a result I stopped paying it through PAYE and used a direct debit instead for the last few months I have left on it so that I don't fall into that trap. :)

6k Student Loan
2k CC
4k to a friend
1.5k OD

Got a nice new job now, so all should be good by March (bar the student loan of course!)

I too did the partying and holidaying on the card with money I didn't have, did a balance transfer then re-spent all the money again, at one stage it was at about 14k but I have gotten myself somewhat under control now, being out of work for 6 months didn't help either, here's to the day it's all gone!

This has made me very happy! thanks :D

(I ended up repaying about 100% over my loan amount!?!)

About £20,000 between 2 of us and a £100,000 mortgage.

We are reducing the debt at the moment, hopefully this time next year it will be a £3-4K less than that.

I racked up quite a bit over the years in overdrafts, credit cards, bank loans and student loans (approx £18k) but my Olds very kindly let me move home for a year when I split with my ex so at the end of this month I'll have wiped out the lot and be back to £0.
I've just paid off the final £3722.86 of my bank loan and I am now officially 100% debt free :) (well, I have a little bit on my credit card but that gets cleared at the end of every month now).

It's a good feeling! Thanks entirely to my Olds who took me back in and let me live here pretty much rent-free for the last year. I cleared £4k off a credit card, about £4K in Student Loan and about £4k again in bank loan.

I think I owe the Olds a few beers and a nice meal out somewhere :p.

None.

No mortgage, no loans, nothing.

House paid for, car paid for and everything else I own is paid for.

I use a credit card for convenience and it gets paid off at the end of every month.

:D

Aside from the mortgage (which isn't bad) absolutely no debt. However, we have a baby due in a few weeks and work decided to drop me to part time starting 2 days after the due date.....which means we lose our health insurance about 2 weeks after the baby is born. Thanks for that

Fortunately, we have a few thousand in savings and my wife will be getting a nice inheritance from her gran next spring. Wife's parents are also extraordinarily wonderful and generous - they've helped us out financially a couple of times when we've been in trouble.

I am incredibly lucky and never forget it for a second.

On a note about healthcare. As a brit living in the US, what are your thoughts on it and the comparison to the UK? I assume you pay a lot less tax but also need to pay towards a plan?

Depends on the company you work for. In my current job my company pays 100% of the cost, which is awesome....and why I'm so gutted to be losing it :(

Healthcare is amazing over here - it's like stepping into the future after experiencing the NHS for years. But then the NHS is free for everybody.....so it's swings & roundabouts really.

Have you wiped your debt?

I was wondering if a "how much debt have you got?" thread and stumbled across this one.

So has anyone paid off their debt? Has it got worse?

Valid reason for bumping i feel.
