Customs/Postal Charges

Should read up on importing goods then.

I'm sorry but it's very common knowlegege and if you went on royal mails website it's nice and clear.

As I said its still better paying that £8 though, as you have found most packages get through for nothing.

why not prepay? if itas a small item like a tshirt that guy then hewould have only paid the £3.16 instead he had to pay that aswell as the silly £8 handling fee

Becuase 99 times out of a hundread you won't be charged anything, it won't be checked.
So you pay it once.

Now if you prepaidhe £3(or what ever it is depending on item) on every one of those hundread orders, you would be paying £300 rather than £11.

about 75% of my orders got checked by customs. even some of the items under the threshold have been inspected and labeled as such

Given that you've been registered on here since '03 and have the best part of 9000 posts why don't you know ... there's a thread asking about it, where the answers make those things obvious, on average once a month in GD ...

Is that aimed at me? If so what a ridiculous comment!

I've been here since '03 and made the best part of 9000 posts, but I don't pretent to have read even a fraction of the tens of millions of posts on this forum?! Why should that one in particular have been of interest to me before today?

Where is this 99% figure coming from? The last 3 packages that I remember I've received from the USA have been charged. The last of which was a handling charge of £13.50.

It's a risk game and depends where you order from. But generally speaking order of the bay or other places and they more often than not write gift or false value on it.

Most places don't offer to pre pay tax anyway.

Made up, but I'm running at more than 99%. As do most people, when you see these threads most people get packages paying nothing. Becuase they can't check every package and so most get through.

Did they typically have value declaration on the outside?

i thought it was mandatory to have a customs declaration? i cant find anything on google for the uk but some countries wont even accept goods without them

I told you that they just make it up as they go along, i ordered some tshirts from the states a while back and they wanted £20. What for i asked. They said custom charges, i said i never requested that my goods be inspected and I had already paid for delivery. They said you don't have a choice. I asked for my item to see if they would give it too me as i was going to do a runner. But they refused to give me the item to inspect it until i gave them money.

Customs charges aren't for them being inspected. I think you missed the point of what they are.

Low value items can go through without one, essentially customs officials receive a list detailing the goods and cost of all low value items from each courier/handler each day.
