I used to love his work, but I'm not sold on this by looking at the trailer.
The fact that they've gone for a fully acted, more traditional film style makes the humour he is known for look too staged and unfunny.
Even the Borat and Bruno films were so staged that they lost some of their charm.
I honestly think his best work was as the Borat character when it was just part of the Ali G tv show. What made his characters funny was by showing up a member of the public, celebrity or politician. I'll give that it's difficult now he is so well known and it's also difficult to make a major film when the emphasis is just on finding people to make fun of and get them to sign off on it.
His classic stuff like this was best:
"Borat like English Barry... but people call me Steve!"
I enjoyed it. It was extremely juvenile, and frequently offensive for the sake of being offensive, and at times outright surreal... but it managed to do so in a hilarious fashion.
I'm surprised that not many people talk about the Ali G movie, its not just Borat, Bruno and the Dictator its Ali G as well. This movie doesn't get enough credit as that's what started it all.
Ali G on The 11 Clock and later Ali G Show is a different character from that of the movie. The movie character is like a parody of the original. The tv show version had great questions, windups, and timing in his interviews. The movie one was portrayed as dumb, fatally flawed by introducing "me Sheila" as an actual character rather than a theoretical girlfriend, the humour was completely low brow, it made Benny Hill look like satire. I could go on but in short it was just bad, bad, bad.
Just this moment come back from this.
Absolutely brilliant. Everyone laughing, too busy laughing and listening to talk.
Excellent way to spend my Sunday morning.
